Correct answer: B

  1. Use the spin-only magnetic moment formula

For a free ion, the spin-only magnetic moment is

μ=n(n+2) BM\mu = \sqrt{n(n+2)}\ \text{BM}μ=n(n+2) BM

where nnn is the number of unpaired electrons.

  1. Find electronic configurations of the ions

(i) Ti3+Ti^{3+}Ti3+

Atomic number of Ti = 22

Neutral Ti: Ti=[Ar]3d24s2Ti = [Ar]3d^2 4s^2Ti=[Ar]3d24s2

For Ti3+Ti^{3+}Ti3+, remove first two electrons from 4s4s4s and one from 3d3d3d: Ti3+=[Ar]3d1Ti^{3+} = [Ar]3d^1Ti3+=[Ar]3d1

So, number of unpaired electrons: n=1n=1n=1

Hence, μ=1(1+2)=3≈1.73 BM\mu = \sqrt{1(1+2)} = \sqrt{3} \approx 1.73\ \text{BM}μ=1(1+2)=3≈1.73 BM

(ii) V2+V^{2+}V2+

Atomic number of V = 23

Neutral V: V=[Ar]3d34s2V = [Ar]3d^3 4s^2V=[Ar]3d34s2

For V2+V^{2+}V2+, remove two electrons from 4s4s4s: V2+=[Ar]3d3V^{2+} = [Ar]3d^3V2+=[Ar]3d3

So, number of unpaired electrons: n=3n=3n=3

Hence, μ=3(3+2)=15≈3.87 BM\mu = \sqrt{3(3+2)} = \sqrt{15} \approx 3.87\ \text{BM}μ=3(3+2)=15≈3.87 BM

(iii) Sc3+Sc^{3+}Sc3+

Atomic number of Sc = 21

Neutral Sc: Sc=[Ar]3d14s2Sc = [Ar]3d^1 4s^2Sc=[Ar]3d14s2

For Sc3+Sc^{3+}Sc3+, remove two electrons from 4s4s4s and one from 3d3d3d: Sc3+=[Ar]Sc^{3+} = [Ar]Sc3+=[Ar]

So, number of unpaired electrons: n=0n=0n=0

Hence, μ=0 BM\mu = 0\ \text{BM}μ=0 BM

  1. Collect the values in the required order

For Ti3+,V2+,Sc3+Ti^{3+}, V^{2+}, Sc^{3+}Ti3+,V2+,Sc3+ respectively:

1.73, 3.87, 01.73,\ 3.87,\ 01.73, 3.87, 0

  1. Match with the options

This corresponds to Option B.

  1. Comparison with stored correct answer

Stored correct answer = B

Our derived answer = B

So, they agree.
