Potassium permanganate on heating at 513 K gives a product which is :
  1. A
    paramagnetic and colourless
  2. B
    diamagnetic and green
  3. C
    diamagnetic and colourless
  4. D
    paramagnetic and green
View written solutionFree

Correct answer: D

  1. Reaction on heating potassium permanganate

Potassium permanganate decomposes on heating:

2KMnO4→ΔK2MnO4+MnO2+O22KMnO_4 \xrightarrow{\Delta} K_2MnO_4 + MnO_2 + O_22KMnO4ΔK2MnO4+MnO2+O2

At about 513 K513\,\text{K}513K, one of the products formed is potassium manganate, K2MnO4K_2MnO_4K2MnO4.

  1. Colour of K2MnO4K_2MnO_4K2MnO4

The manganate ion MnO42−MnO_4^{2-}MnO42− is green in colour.

So the required product is green.

  1. Magnetic nature of K2MnO4K_2MnO_4K2MnO4

In MnO42−MnO_4^{2-}MnO42−, let oxidation state of Mn be xxx:

x+4(−2)=−2x + 4(-2) = -2x+4(−2)=−2 x−8=−2x - 8 = -2x−8=−2 x=+6x = +6x=+6

So manganese is in the +6+6+6 oxidation state.

Atomic number of Mn = 25

Ground-state electronic configuration of Mn:

[Ar] 3d54s2[Ar] \, 3d^5 4s^2[Ar]3d54s2

For Mn6+Mn^{6+}Mn6+, remove 6 electrons:

Mn6+:[Ar] 3d1Mn^{6+} : [Ar] \, 3d^1Mn6+:[Ar]3d1

A d1d^1d1 system has one unpaired electron, hence it is paramagnetic.

  1. Match with options
  • A: paramagnetic and colourless →\rightarrow→ wrong (not colourless)
  • B: diamagnetic and green →\rightarrow→ wrong (it is paramagnetic)
  • C: diamagnetic and colourless →\rightarrow→ wrong
  • D: paramagnetic and green →\rightarrow→ correct

Therefore, the correct answer is:

D\boxed{D}D
