A metal complex with a formula MCl4⋅3NH3\mathrm{MCl}_4 \cdot 3 \mathrm{NH}_3MCl4​⋅3NH3​ is involved in sp3 d2\mathrm{sp}^3 \mathrm{~d}^2sp3 d2 hybridisation. It upon reaction with excess of AgNO3\mathrm{AgNO}_3AgNO3​ solution gives 'xxx' moles of AgCl . Consider 'xxx' is equal to the number of lone pairs of electron present in central atom of BrF5\mathrm{BrF}_5BrF5​. Then the number of geometrical isomers exhibited by the complex is ‾\underline{\hspace{2cm}}​.

  1. Find xxx from BrF5\mathrm{BrF}_5BrF5​

    In BrF5\mathrm{BrF}_5BrF5​, bromine is the central atom.

    • Valence electrons on Br =7= 7=7
    • It forms 555 Br–F bonds
    • Hence one lone pair remains on Br

    Therefore, the number of lone pairs on the central atom in BrF5\mathrm{BrF}_5BrF5​ is x=1x=1x=1

  2. Use AgNO3_33​ test to identify ionisable chloride

    The complex has molecular formula MCl4⋅3NH3\mathrm{MCl}_4\cdot 3\mathrm{NH}_3MCl4​⋅3NH3​

    On treatment with excess AgNO3\mathrm{AgNO}_3AgNO3​, it gives x=1x=1x=1 mole of AgCl.

    This means only one chloride ion is outside the coordination sphere and is precipitated as AgCl.

    So the complex must be written as [MCl3(NH3)3]Cl[\mathrm{MCl}_3(\mathrm{NH}_3)_3]\mathrm{Cl}[MCl3​(NH3​)3​]Cl

  3. Determine coordination number and geometry

    Inside the coordination sphere, the ligands are:

    • 333 chloride ligands
    • 333 ammonia ligands

    Total coordination number =6=6=6.

    Since it is stated to involve sp3d2\mathrm{sp}^3d^2sp3d2 hybridisation, the geometry is octahedral.

  4. Find geometrical isomers of [MCl3(NH3)3]+[\mathrm{MCl}_3(\mathrm{NH}_3)_3]^+[MCl3​(NH3​)3​]+

    This is an octahedral complex of type [MA3B3][\mathrm{MA}_3\mathrm{B}_3][MA3​B3​]

    Such complexes show two geometrical isomers:

    1. fac isomer: all three identical ligands occupy one face
    2. mer isomer: three identical ligands lie in a meridional plane

    Therefore, the number of geometrical isomers is 222
