Coordination Compounds question

2025 · 7 Apr · Shift 1 · Q19

JEE MainChemistryCoordination CompoundsMCQ+4 / −1
An octahedral complex having molecular composition Co⋅5NH3⋅Cl2.SO4\mathrm{Co} \cdot 5 \mathrm{NH}_3 \cdot \mathrm{Cl}^2 . \mathrm{SO}_4Co⋅5NH3⋅Cl2.SO4 has two isomers A and B. The solution of A gives a white precipitate with AgNO3\mathrm{AgNO}_3AgNO3 solution and the solution of B gives white precipitate with BaCl2\mathrm{BaCl}_2BaCl2 solution. The type of isomerism exhibited by the complex is,
  1. A
    Co-ordinate isomerism
  2. B
    Ionisation isomerism
  3. C
    Geometrical isomerism
  4. D
    Linkage isomerism

Correct answer: B

  1. Interpret the composition

    The complex has molecular composition: Co⋅5NH3⋅Cl2⋅SO4\mathrm{Co}\cdot 5\mathrm{NH}_3\cdot \mathrm{Cl}_2\cdot \mathrm{SO}_4Co⋅5NH3⋅Cl2⋅SO4

Since it is an octahedral cobalt complex with 6 coordination positions, and there are 5 neutral ligands NH3\mathrm{NH}_3NH3, the 6th position must be occupied by either:

    • one Cl−\mathrm{Cl^-}Cl−, or
    • one SO42−\mathrm{SO_4^{2-}}SO42− group (as coordinated sulfate).
  2. Use the precipitation tests

    • Isomer A gives white precipitate with AgNO3\mathrm{AgNO_3}AgNO3.

This indicates presence of free chloride ion in solution, because: Ag++Cl−→AgCl(s)\mathrm{Ag^+ + Cl^- \rightarrow AgCl(s)}Ag++Cl−→AgCl(s)

    • Isomer B gives white precipitate with BaCl2\mathrm{BaCl_2}BaCl2.

This indicates presence of free sulfate ion in solution, because: Ba2++SO42−→BaSO4(s)\mathrm{Ba^{2+} + SO_4^{2-} \rightarrow BaSO_4(s)}Ba2++SO42−→BaSO4(s)

  3. Write the two isomeric forms

Therefore, the two isomers must be:

    • A: free Cl−\mathrm{Cl^-}Cl− outside the coordination sphere, sulfate coordinated inside: [Co(NH3)5SO4]Cl[\mathrm{Co}(\mathrm{NH}_3)_5\mathrm{SO}_4]\mathrm{Cl}[Co(NH3)5SO4]Cl

    • B: free SO42−\mathrm{SO_4^{2-}}SO42− outside the coordination sphere, chloride coordinated inside: [Co(NH3)5Cl]SO4[\mathrm{Co}(\mathrm{NH}_3)_5\mathrm{Cl}]\mathrm{SO}_4[Co(NH3)5Cl]SO4

  4. Identify the isomerism

Here, the ligand inside the coordination sphere and the counter ion outside the coordination sphere are interchanged: Cl−↔SO42−\mathrm{Cl^-} \leftrightarrow \mathrm{SO_4^{2-}}Cl−↔SO42−

This is the definition of ionisation isomerism.

  5. Check options

    • A: Co-ordinate isomerism — Incorrect
    • B: Ionisation isomerism — Correct
    • C: Geometrical isomerism — Incorrect
    • D: Linkage isomerism — Incorrect

Final Answer

B: Ionisation isomerism\boxed{\text{B: Ionisation isomerism}}B: Ionisation isomerism
