Correct answer: 4

  1. Find the steric number of the central atom for each species.

For a central atom, if the total number of electron pairs around it is:

  • 4⇒sp34 \Rightarrow sp^34⇒sp3
  • 5⇒sp3d5 \Rightarrow sp^3d5⇒sp3d
  • 6⇒sp3d26 \Rightarrow sp^3d^26⇒sp3d2

So we must count bond pairs + lone pairs on the central atom.

  1. Check each molecule/ion one by one

(i) PF5\mathrm{PF_5}PF5

  • Central atom: P
  • Bonds: 5
  • Lone pairs on P: 0
  • Total electron pairs =5=5=5

Hence, hybridisation =sp3d= sp^3d=sp3d.

Not sp3d2sp^3d^2sp3d2.

(ii) BrF5\mathrm{BrF_5}BrF5

  • Central atom: Br
  • Br has 7 valence electrons.
  • It forms 5 bonds with F, leaving 1 lone pair.
  • Total electron pairs =5+1=6=5+1=6=5+1=6

Hence, hybridisation =sp3d2= sp^3d^2=sp3d2.

Count this.

(iii) PCl3\mathrm{PCl_3}PCl3

  • Central atom: P
  • P has 5 valence electrons.
  • It forms 3 bonds with Cl, leaving 1 lone pair.
  • Total electron pairs =3+1=4=3+1=4=3+1=4

Hence, hybridisation =sp3= sp^3=sp3.

Not sp3d2sp^3d^2sp3d2.

(iv) SF6\mathrm{SF_6}SF6

  • Central atom: S
  • Bonds: 6
  • Lone pairs: 0
  • Total electron pairs =6=6=6

Hence, hybridisation =sp3d2= sp^3d^2=sp3d2.

Count this.

(v) [ICl4]−[\mathrm{ICl_4}]^-[ICl4]−

  • Central atom: I
  • I has 7 valence electrons, and one extra electron due to negative charge ⇒8\Rightarrow 8⇒8 electrons.
  • It forms 4 bonds with Cl, leaving 2 lone pairs.
  • Total electron pairs =4+2=6=4+2=6=4+2=6

Hence, hybridisation =sp3d2= sp^3d^2=sp3d2.

Count this.

(vi) ClF3\mathrm{ClF_3}ClF3

  • Central atom: Cl
  • Cl has 7 valence electrons.
  • It forms 3 bonds with F, leaving 2 lone pairs.
  • Total electron pairs =3+2=5=3+2=5=3+2=5

Hence, hybridisation =sp3d= sp^3d=sp3d.

Not sp3d2sp^3d^2sp3d2.

(vii) IF5\mathrm{IF_5}IF5

  • Central atom: I
  • I has 7 valence electrons.
  • It forms 5 bonds with F, leaving 1 lone pair.
  • Total electron pairs =5+1=6=5+1=6=5+1=6

Hence, hybridisation =sp3d2= sp^3d^2=sp3d2.

Count this.

  1. Total number with sp3d2sp^3d^2sp3d2 hybridisation

The species are:

  • BrF5\mathrm{BrF_5}BrF5
  • SF6\mathrm{SF_6}SF6
  • [ICl4]−[\mathrm{ICl_4}]^-[ICl4]−
  • IF5\mathrm{IF_5}IF5

So the required number is 444

  1. Comparison with stored correct answer

Stored correct answer = 444

Our derived answer = 444

So they agree.
