Consider the ground state of chromium atom (Z=24)(Z=24)(Z=24). How many electrons are with Azimuthal quantum number l=1l=1l=1 and l=2l=2l=2 respectively ?
  1. A
    16 and 5
  2. B
    12 and 5
  3. C
    12 and 4
  4. D
    16 and 4

Correct answer: B

  1. Write the ground-state electronic configuration of chromium

    Chromium (Z=24)(Z=24)(Z=24) is an exception to the usual filling order. Its ground-state configuration is: Cr:1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d5 4s1\mathrm{Cr}: 1s^2\,2s^2\,2p^6\,3s^2\,3p^6\,3d^5\,4s^1Cr:1s22s22p63s23p63d54s1 or [Ar] 3d5 4s1[\mathrm{Ar}]\,3d^5\,4s^1[Ar]3d54s1

  2. Relate azimuthal quantum number lll to subshell type

    • For sss-subshell, l=0l=0l=0
    • For ppp-subshell, l=1l=1l=1
    • For ddd-subshell, l=2l=2l=2
  3. Count electrons with l=1l=1l=1

Electrons with l=1l=1l=1 are all the electrons in ppp-subshells.

Present ppp-subshells in chromium ground state:

    • 2p62p^62p6 gives 666 electrons
    • 3p63p^63p6 gives 666 electrons

    Total with l=1l=1l=1: 6+6=126+6=126+6=12

  4. Count electrons with l=2l=2l=2

Electrons with l=2l=2l=2 are all the electrons in ddd-subshells.

Present ddd-subshell in chromium ground state:

    • 3d53d^53d5 gives 555 electrons

    Total with l=2l=2l=2: 555

  5. Match with options

Hence, the number of electrons with:

    • l=1l=1l=1 is 121212
    • l=2l=2l=2 is 555

    So the correct option is: B: 12 and 5\boxed{\text{B: }12\text{ and }5}B: 12 and 5
