Given below are two statements : Statement I : The identification of Ni2+Ni^{2+}Ni2+ is carried out by dimethyl glyoxime in the presence of NH4OHNH_4OHNH4OH. Statement II : The dimethyl glyoxime is a bidentate neutral ligand. In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
  1. A
Statement I is false but Statement II is true.
  2. B
Statement I is true but Statement II is false.
  3. C
Both Statement I and Statement II are false.
  4. D
Both Statement I and Statement II are true.

Correct answer: D

  1. Analyze Statement I

Statement I says: identification of Ni2+Ni^{2+}Ni2+ is carried out by dimethyl glyoxime in the presence of NH4OHNH_4OHNH4OH.

In qualitative inorganic analysis, Ni2+Ni^{2+}Ni2+ is confirmed by adding dimethyl glyoxime (DMG) in ammoniacal medium.

The reaction gives a characteristic bright red precipitate of nickel dimethyl glyoximate:

    Ni2++2 DMG→NH4OHNi(DMG)2↓Ni^{2+} + 2\,DMG \xrightarrow[NH_4OH]{} Ni(DMG)_2 \downarrowNi2++2DMGNH4OHNi(DMG)2↓

    Hence, Statement I is true.

  2. Analyze Statement II

Statement II says: dimethyl glyoxime is a bidentate neutral ligand.

Dimethyl glyoxime coordinates to the metal through two nitrogen donor atoms, so it acts as a bidentate ligand.

In the usual description used in coordination chemistry for this test, DMG is treated as a neutral bidentate ligand.

    Therefore, Statement II is true.

  3. Choose the correct option

Since both statements are true, the correct option is:

    D\boxed{D}D

  4. Comparison with stored answer

    Stored correct answer: DDD

    My derived answer: DDD

So, the answer agrees with the stored correct answer.
