A solution of m-chloronailimne, m-chlorophenol and m-chlorobenzoic acid in ethyal acetate was extracted initially with a saturated solution of NaHCO3NaHCO_3NaHCO3​ to give fraction A. The left over organic phase was extracted with dilute NaoH solution tio give fraction B. The final organiic layer was labelled as fraction C. Fractions A,B and C, contain respectively :

  1. Identify the nature of each compound

    The mixture contains:

    • mmm-chlorobenzoic acid: carboxylic acid
    • mmm-chlorophenol: phenol (weak acid)
    • mmm-chloroaniline: amine (basic)
  2. Extraction with saturated NaHCO3NaHCO_3NaHCO3​

    Sodium bicarbonate is a weak base. It reacts with carboxylic acids but not with phenols.

    ArCOOH+NaHCO3→ArCOO−Na++CO2+H2O\text{ArCOOH} + NaHCO_3 \rightarrow \text{ArCOO}^- Na^+ + CO_2 + H_2OArCOOH+NaHCO3​→ArCOO−Na++CO2​+H2​O

    Therefore, only mmm-chlorobenzoic acid is converted into its water-soluble sodium salt and goes into the aqueous layer.

    So, Fraction A = mmm-chlorobenzoic acid.

  3. Extraction of leftover organic layer with dilute NaOHNaOHNaOH

    Now the organic layer contains:

    • mmm-chlorophenol
    • mmm-chloroaniline

    Dilute NaOHNaOHNaOH is a stronger base than NaHCO3NaHCO_3NaHCO3​ and deprotonates phenol:

    ArOH+NaOH→ArO−Na++H2O\text{ArOH} + NaOH \rightarrow \text{ArO}^- Na^+ + H_2OArOH+NaOH→ArO−Na++H2​O

    Thus mmm-chlorophenol becomes water-soluble sodium phenoxide and goes into the aqueous layer.

    So, Fraction B = mmm-chlorophenol.

  4. Final organic layer

    The compound left in the organic layer is the neutral/basic compound that was not extracted by base:

    • mmm-chloroaniline

    So, Fraction C = mmm-chloroaniline.

  5. Match with options

    Fractions A,B,CA, B, CA,B,C contain respectively:

    • AAA: mmm-chlorobenzoic acid
    • BBB: mmm-chlorophenol
    • CCC: mmm-chloroaniline

    This corresponds to Option B.
