Correct answer: A

  1. Identify the reagent conditions

    The solution is treated with:

    • conc. HClHClHCl
    • then H2SH_2SH2S

In qualitative salt analysis, passing H2SH_2SH2S in the presence of acid precipitates only those metal ions whose sulfides are very insoluble, i.e. Group II cations.

  2. Effect of concentrated HClHClHCl

Concentrated HClHClHCl makes the medium strongly acidic, so the concentration of S2−S^{2-}S2− from H2SH_2SH2S remains very low: H2S⇌2H++S2−H_2S \rightleftharpoons 2H^+ + S^{2-}H2S⇌2H++S2− High [H+][H^+][H+] suppresses ionization of H2SH_2SH2S, therefore only very insoluble sulfides precipitate.

  3. Check each given cation

    Given ions are: Al3+, Zn2+, Ca2+, Fe3+, Ni2+, Ba2+, Cu2+Al^{3+},\ Zn^{2+},\ Ca^{2+},\ Fe^{3+},\ Ni^{2+},\ Ba^{2+},\ Cu^{2+}Al3+, Zn2+, Ca2+, Fe3+, Ni2+, Ba2+, Cu2+

Now test which of these form sulfides precipitable in acidic medium:

    • Al3+Al^{3+}Al3+: does not precipitate with H2SH_2SH2S in acidic medium.
    • Zn2+Zn^{2+}Zn2+: ZnSZnSZnS precipitates in alkaline/ammoniacal medium, not in acidic medium.
    • Ca2+Ca^{2+}Ca2+: does not precipitate.
    • Fe3+Fe^{3+}Fe3+: does not precipitate as sulfide in acidic medium under this group analysis condition.
    • Ni2+Ni^{2+}Ni2+: NiSNiSNiS precipitates in basic/ammoniacal medium, not in acidic medium.
    • Ba2+Ba^{2+}Ba2+: does not precipitate.
    • Cu2+Cu^{2+}Cu2+: forms highly insoluble CuSCuSCuS, which does precipitate in acidic medium.
  4. Count the precipitated cations

    Only: Cu2+→CuS↓Cu^{2+} \rightarrow CuS \downarrowCu2+→CuS↓

Hence, the total number of cations precipitated is: 111

  5. Option matching

    • A: 111 ✅
    • B: 333 ❌
    • C: 444 ❌
    • D: 222 ❌

Final Answer: A (1)
