Let the oxidation state of bromine be xxx.

Using the rule that the sum of oxidation states in a neutral molecule is zero:

(+1)+x+3(−2)=0(+1) + x + 3(-2) = 0(+1)+x+3(−2)=0 1+x−6=01 + x - 6 = 01+x−6=0 x−5=0x - 5 = 0x−5=0 x=+5x = +5x=+5

So, oxidation state of Br in HBrO3\mathrm{HBrO_3}HBrO3​ is +5+5+5.

  1. Find oxidation state of Br in perbromic acid, HBrO4\mathrm{HBrO_4}HBrO4​

Let the oxidation state of bromine be yyy.

Again, for a neutral molecule:

(+1)+y+4(−2)=0(+1) + y + 4(-2) = 0(+1)+y+4(−2)=0 1+y−8=01 + y - 8 = 01+y−8=0 y−7=0y - 7 = 0y−7=0 y=+7y = +7y=+7

So, oxidation state of Br in HBrO4\mathrm{HBrO_4}HBrO4​ is +7+7+7.

(+5)+(+7)=12(+5) + (+7) = 12(+5)+(+7)=12

Therefore, the required sum is:
