    The oxidation state of Mo is to be found in the anion: [PMo12O40]3−[PMo_{12}O_{40}]^{3-}[PMo12​O40​]3−

  2. Assign known oxidation states

    Let oxidation state of each Mo be xxx.

    • Oxidation state of P=+5P = +5P=+5
    • Oxidation state of O=−2O = -2O=−2
    • There are 121212 Mo atoms and 404040 O atoms.
  3. Set up the oxidation state equation
