Correct answer: C

  1. Identify the group 15 non-metallic elements

    Group 15 elements are: N, P, As, Sb, Bi\mathrm{N,\ P,\ As,\ Sb,\ Bi}N, P, As, Sb, Bi

    Among these, the non-metallic ones are primarily: N and P\mathrm{N\ and\ P}N and P

  2. Find which one has the weakest E−EE-EE−E bond

Compare N−N\mathrm{N-N}N−N and P−P\mathrm{P-P}P−P single bonds.

    • In nitrogen, the size is very small, so lone pair-lone pair repulsion is high, making the single bond relatively weak.
    • This is why nitrogen prefers to form a strong multiple bond N≡N\mathrm{N\equiv N}N≡N rather than stable catenated single bonds.

Hence, the element EEE is: E=NE = \mathrm{N}E=N

  3. Determine the maximum covalency of nitrogen

Nitrogen has valence shell configuration: 2s22p32s^2 2p^32s22p3

Since nitrogen belongs to the second period, it has no vacant ddd-orbitals and cannot expand its octet.

Therefore, its maximum covalency is limited to: 444

Example: In NH4+\mathrm{NH_4^+}NH4+, nitrogen shows covalency 4.

  4. Check the options

    • A: 555 ❌
    • B: 333 ❌
    • C: 444 ✅
    • D: 666 ❌

Therefore, the correct answer is: 4\boxed{4}4
