Among the following oxides of p-block elements, number of oxides having amphoteric nature is ‾\underline{\hspace{2cm}}​. We need to count how many of the following are amphoteric:

An amphoteric oxide is one that reacts with both acids and bases.


  1. Check each oxide one by one

(i) Cl2O7\mathrm{Cl_2O_7}Cl2​O7​

This is the anhydride of perchloric acid:

Cl2O7+H2O→2HClO4\mathrm{Cl_2O_7 + H_2O \rightarrow 2HClO_4}Cl2​O7​+H2​O→2HClO4​

So it is an acidic oxide, not amphoteric.


(ii) CO\mathrm{CO}CO

Carbon monoxide is a neutral oxide. It is neither acidic nor basic. So, not amphoteric.


(iii) PbO2\mathrm{PbO_2}PbO2​

Lead dioxide shows amphoteric character. It reacts with acids and also with strong bases. Hence, amphoteric.


(iv) N2O\mathrm{N_2O}N2​O

Nitrous oxide is a neutral oxide. So, not amphoteric.


(v) NO\mathrm{NO}NO

Nitric oxide is also a neutral oxide. So, not amphoteric.


(vi) Al2O3\mathrm{Al_2O_3}Al2​O3​

Aluminium oxide is a standard example of an amphoteric oxide. It reacts with both acids and bases. Hence, amphoteric.


(vii) SiO2\mathrm{SiO_2}SiO2​

Silicon dioxide is an acidic oxide. It reacts with bases, not with acids in the amphoteric sense. So, not amphoteric.


(viii) N2O5\mathrm{N_2O_5}N2​O5​

This is the anhydride of nitric acid:

N2O5+H2O→2HNO3\mathrm{N_2O_5 + H_2O \rightarrow 2HNO_3}N2​O5​+H2​O→2HNO3​

So it is an acidic oxide, not amphoteric.


(ix) SnO2\mathrm{SnO_2}SnO2​

Tin dioxide is amphoteric. It reacts with both acids and bases. Hence, amphoteric.

The amphoteric oxides are:

PbO2, Al2O3, SnO2\mathrm{PbO_2,\ Al_2O_3,\ SnO_2}PbO2​, Al2​O3​, SnO2​
