JEE MainChemistryP Block ElementsMCQ+4 / −1
Given below are two statements : Statement (I) : SiO2\mathrm{SiO}_2SiO2 and GeO2\mathrm{GeO}_2GeO2 are acidic while SnO\mathrm{SnO}SnO and PbO\mathrm{PbO}PbO are amphoteric in nature. Statement (II) : Allotropic forms of carbon are due to property of catenation and pπ−dπ\mathrm{p} \pi-\mathrm{d} \pipπ−dπ bond formation. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
  1. A
Statement I is false but Statement II is true
  2. B
Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  3. C
Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  4. D
Statement I is true but Statement II is false

Correct answer: D

  1. Examine Statement (I)

Statement (I): SiO2\mathrm{SiO}_2SiO2 and GeO2\mathrm{GeO}_2GeO2 are acidic while SnO\mathrm{SnO}SnO and PbO\mathrm{PbO}PbO are amphoteric in nature.

Group 14 oxides show a trend in acid-base character down the group:

    • CO2\mathrm{CO}_2CO2 and SiO2\mathrm{SiO}_2SiO2 are acidic.
    • GeO2\mathrm{GeO}_2GeO2 is generally considered acidic to weakly amphoteric, but in standard JEE treatment it is commonly grouped with the acidic oxides of the upper members.
    • SnO\mathrm{SnO}SnO and PbO\mathrm{PbO}PbO are amphoteric.

So the statement matches the standard trend taught for Group 14 elements.

    Hence, Statement (I) is true.

  2. Examine Statement (II)

Statement (II): Allotropic forms of carbon are due to property of catenation and pπ−dπ\mathrm{p}\pi-\mathrm{d}\pipπ−dπ bond formation.

    • Carbon does show catenation, which helps in forming long chains and networks.
    • However, carbon does not have vacant d-orbitals in its valence shell, so pπ−dπ\mathrm{p}\pi-\mathrm{d}\pipπ−dπ bonding is not possible for carbon.
    • The existence of allotropes of carbon (diamond, graphite, fullerene, etc.) is due mainly to catenation and the ability of carbon to form different types of covalent bonding and hybridisation, not pπ−dπ\mathrm{p}\pi-\mathrm{d}\pipπ−dπ bonding.

    Hence, Statement (II) is false.

  3. Choose the correct option

    • Statement I: True
    • Statement II: False

    Therefore, the correct option is:

D: Statement I is true but Statement II is false\boxed{\text{D: Statement I is true but Statement II is false}}D: Statement I is true but Statement II is false

  4. Comparison with stored correct answer

    Stored correct answer: D

My derived answer also is D, so they agree.
