Given below are the pairs of group 13 elements showing their relation in terms of atomic radius. (B<Al),(Al<Ga),(Ga<In)(\mathrm{B}\lt \mathrm{Al}),(\mathrm{Al}\lt \mathrm{Ga}),(\mathrm{Ga}\lt \mathrm{In})(B<Al),(Al<Ga),(Ga<In) and (In<Tl)(\mathrm{In}\lt \mathrm{Tl})(In<Tl) Identify the elements present in the incorrect pair and in that pair find out the element (X) that has higher ionic radius (M3+)\left(\mathrm{M}^{3+}\right)(M3+) than the other one. The atomic number of the element (X)(\mathrm{X})(X) is
  1. A
    49
  2. B
    81
  3. C
    31
  4. D

Correct answer: C

  1. Given atomic radius relations in group 13

    The pairs given are:

    B<Al, Al<Ga, Ga<In, In<TlB < Al,\, Al < Ga,\, Ga < In,\, In < TlB<Al,Al<Ga,Ga<In,In<Tl

We need to identify the incorrect pair in terms of atomic radius, and then in that pair find the element XXX whose ionic radius as M3+M^{3+}M3+ is higher than the other.

  2. Actual trend of atomic radii in group 13

Down the group, atomic radius generally increases, but there are important exceptions due to d-block contraction and poor shielding by d and f electrons.

    For group 13:

    B<AlB < AlB<Al This is correct.

Al<GaAl < GaAl<Ga This is incorrect. In fact, due to d-block contraction, gallium has nearly the same size as aluminium and is slightly smaller than aluminium. So actually:

    Ga<AlGa < AlGa<Al

    Ga<InGa < InGa<In This is correct.

In<TlIn < TlIn<Tl This is generally correct for atomic radius.

Hence, the incorrect pair is (Al<Ga)(Al < Ga)(Al<Ga), i.e. the elements are Al and Ga.

  3. Compare ionic radii of Al3+Al^{3+}Al3+ and Ga3+Ga^{3+}Ga3+

We now need the element in this incorrect pair whose ionic radius M3+M^{3+}M3+ is greater.

Due to poor shielding by the 3d3d3d electrons in Ga, the size of Ga3+Ga^{3+}Ga3+ becomes slightly larger than Al3+Al^{3+}Al3+.

    Therefore:

    r(Ga3+)>r(Al3+)r(Ga^{3+}) > r(Al^{3+})r(Ga3+)>r(Al3+)

    So, X=GaX = GaX=Ga

  4. Atomic number of Ga

    Gallium has atomic number:

    Z=31Z = 31Z=31

  5. Final answer

    The correct option is:

    31\boxed{31}31

    So, Option C is correct.
