Correct answer: A

  1. Identify the reaction

When a chloride salt such as NaCl\mathrm{NaCl}NaCl is heated with conc. H2SO4\mathrm{H_2SO_4}H2SO4 and K2Cr2O7\mathrm{K_2Cr_2O_7}K2Cr2O7, the well-known chromyl chloride test occurs.

The reddish fumes produced are chromyl chloride, CrO2Cl2\mathrm{CrO_2Cl_2}CrO2Cl2.

So,

(B)=CrO2Cl2(B)=\mathrm{CrO_2Cl_2}(B)=CrO2Cl2
  1. Why is chromyl chloride formed?

Conc. H2SO4\mathrm{H_2SO_4}H2SO4 first generates HCl\mathrm{HCl}HCl from NaCl\mathrm{NaCl}NaCl, and in the presence of dichromate under strongly acidic conditions, chromyl chloride is formed as red vapours.

A representative overall reaction is:

4NaCl+K2Cr2O7+6H2SO4→2CrO2Cl2+2KHSO4+4NaHSO4+3H2O4\mathrm{NaCl}+\mathrm{K_2Cr_2O_7}+6\mathrm{H_2SO_4} \rightarrow 2\mathrm{CrO_2Cl_2}+2\mathrm{KHSO_4}+4\mathrm{NaHSO_4}+3\mathrm{H_2O}4NaCl+K2Cr2O7+6H2SO4→2CrO2Cl2+2KHSO4+4NaHSO4+3H2O
  1. Reaction of CrO2Cl2\mathrm{CrO_2Cl_2}CrO2Cl2 with NaOH\mathrm{NaOH}NaOH

Chromyl chloride reacts with alkali to give a yellow solution of sodium chromate:

CrO2Cl2+4NaOH→Na2CrO4+2NaCl+2H2O\mathrm{CrO_2Cl_2}+4\mathrm{NaOH}\rightarrow \mathrm{Na_2CrO_4}+2\mathrm{NaCl}+2\mathrm{H_2O}CrO2Cl2+4NaOH→Na2CrO4+2NaCl+2H2O

The yellow colour is due to the chromate ion, CrO42−\mathrm{CrO_4^{2-}}CrO42−.

Hence,

(C)=Na2CrO4(C)=\mathrm{Na_2CrO_4}(C)=Na2CrO4
  1. Match with options
  • A: CrO2Cl2, Na2CrO4\mathrm{CrO_2Cl_2},\ \mathrm{Na_2CrO_4}CrO2Cl2, Na2CrO4 ✔️
  • B: reversed order ✘
  • C: second compound wrong ✘
  • D: Na2Cr2O7\mathrm{Na_2Cr_2O_7}Na2Cr2O7 is orange, not the yellow chromate solution ✘

Therefore, the correct option is:

A\boxed{A}A
