Given below are two statements : Statement (I) : In the Lanthanoids, the formation Ce+4\mathrm{Ce}^{+4}Ce+4 is favoured by its noble gas configuration. Statement (II) : Ce+4\mathrm{Ce}^{+4}Ce+4 is a strong oxidant reverting to the common +3 state. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :

  1. Examine Statement I

    Cerium has atomic number 585858.

    Its electronic configuration is approximately: Ce:[Xe] 4f15d16s2\mathrm{Ce}: [\mathrm{Xe}]\,4f^1 5d^1 6s^2Ce:[Xe]4f15d16s2

    For Ce3+\mathrm{Ce}^{3+}Ce3+, removal of three electrons gives: Ce3+:[Xe] 4f1\mathrm{Ce}^{3+} : [\mathrm{Xe}]\,4f^1Ce3+:[Xe]4f1

    For Ce4+\mathrm{Ce}^{4+}Ce4+, removal of one more electron gives: Ce4+:[Xe]\mathrm{Ce}^{4+} : [\mathrm{Xe}]Ce4+:[Xe]

    This is the noble gas configuration of xenon. Hence, formation of Ce4+\mathrm{Ce}^{4+}Ce4+ is especially favoured.

    So, Statement I is true.

  2. Examine Statement II

    In lanthanoids, the most common oxidation state is +3+3+3.

    Since Ce4+\mathrm{Ce}^{4+}Ce4+ tends to revert to the more common and stable Ce3+\mathrm{Ce}^{3+}Ce3+ state, it readily gains an electron: Ce4++e−→Ce3+\mathrm{Ce}^{4+} + e^- \rightarrow \mathrm{Ce}^{3+}Ce4++e−→Ce3+

    Therefore, Ce4+\mathrm{Ce}^{4+}Ce4+ acts as a strong oxidising agent.

    So, Statement II is true.
