    Statement I: The higher oxidation states are more stable down the group among transition elements unlike p-block elements.

    • In transition elements, especially in the 4d4d4d and 5d5d5d series, higher oxidation states become more stable compared to the corresponding 3d3d3d elements.
    • Example:
      • FeFeFe shows a maximum common oxidation state of +6+6+6 only in strongly oxidizing conditions.
      • RuRuRu and OsOsOs show higher oxidation states like +8+8+8 more readily and stably.
    • Thus, down a transition group, higher oxidation states generally become more stable.

    For p-block elements, the opposite trend is often observed due to the inert pair effect: lower oxidation states become more stable down the group.

    Statement II: Copper can not liberate hydrogen from weak acids.

    • A metal liberates hydrogen from acids only if it is above hydrogen in the electrochemical series.
    • Copper lies below hydrogen in the electrochemical series.
