Correct answer: 3

  1. What is synergic bonding?

In metal carbonyls, bonding between metal and CO has two components:

    • σ\sigmaσ-donation: lone pair on carbon of CO donates to metal.
    • π\piπ-back donation: filled metal ddd-orbitals donate electron density into vacant π∗\pi^*π∗ orbitals of CO.

When both occur together and reinforce each other, it is called synergic bonding.

  2. Check each given species

    We are given:

    • [Cr(CO)6][Cr(CO)_6][Cr(CO)6]
    • [Mn(CO)5][Mn(CO)_5][Mn(CO)5]
    • [Mn2(CO)10][Mn_2(CO)_{10}][Mn2(CO)10]
  3. For [Cr(CO)6][Cr(CO)_6][Cr(CO)6]

This is a metal carbonyl complex. CO is a strong π\piπ-acceptor ligand, so metal-to-ligand π\piπ back bonding occurs along with σ\sigmaσ donation.

Hence, [Cr(CO)6][Cr(CO)_6][Cr(CO)6] does exhibit synergic bonding.

  4. For [Mn(CO)5][Mn(CO)_5][Mn(CO)5]

This is also a carbonyl complex/radical species with CO ligands. Each CO ligand bonds through the same σ\sigmaσ-donation and π\piπ-back bonding interaction.

Hence, [Mn(CO)5][Mn(CO)_5][Mn(CO)5] does exhibit synergic bonding.

  5. For [Mn2(CO)10][Mn_2(CO)_{10}][Mn2(CO)10]

This is dimanganese decacarbonyl, again a metal carbonyl compound. The Mn-CO bonds involve σ\sigmaσ donation from CO and π\piπ back donation from Mn to CO.

Hence, [Mn2(CO)10][Mn_2(CO)_{10}][Mn2(CO)10] does exhibit synergic bonding.

  6. Total number of complexes showing synergic bonding

All three given species show synergic bonding.

    Therefore, the number is: 333
