Correct answer: 9

  1. Identify the complex ion

The compound is: Na[Co(bpy)Cl4]\mathrm{Na}[\mathrm{Co}(\mathrm{bpy})\mathrm{Cl}_4]Na[Co(bpy)Cl4]

So the complex ion is: [Co(bpy)Cl4]−[\mathrm{Co}(\mathrm{bpy})\mathrm{Cl}_4]^-[Co(bpy)Cl4]−

because Na+\mathrm{Na}^+Na+ is the counter ion.

  1. Find oxidation state of cobalt

Let oxidation state of Co be xxx.

  • bpy\mathrm{bpy}bpy (2,2'-bipyridine) is a neutral ligand, so its charge = 000
  • Each Cl−\mathrm{Cl}^-Cl− has charge −1-1−1, and there are 4 chlorides, so total charge from chloride ligands = −4-4−4
  • Overall charge on the complex ion = −1-1−1

Therefore, x+0−4=−1x + 0 - 4 = -1x+0−4=−1 x=+3x = +3x=+3

So, the magnitude of oxidation state of cobalt is: 333

  1. Find coordination number of cobalt
  • bpy\mathrm{bpy}bpy is a bidentate ligand, so it contributes coordination number 222
  • 4 chloride ligands are monodentate, so they contribute 444

Hence, coordination number of Co is: 2+4=62+4=62+4=6

  1. Find the required sum

Sum=magnitude of oxidation state+coordination number\text{Sum} = \text{magnitude of oxidation state} + \text{coordination number}Sum=magnitude of oxidation state+coordination number =3+6=9= 3 + 6 = 9=3+6=9

Final Answer

9\boxed{9}9
