Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure question

2025 · 3 Apr · Shift 2 · Q1

JEE MainChemistryChemical Bonding and Molecular StructureMCQ+4 / −1
Given below are two statements: Statement I : Wet cotton clothes made of cellulose based carbohydrate takes comparatively longer time to get dried than wet nylon polymer based clothes. Statement II : Intermolecular hydrogen bonding with water molecule is more in nylon-based clothes than in the case of cotton clothes. In the light of above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below
  1. A
Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  2. B
Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  3. C
Statement I is false but Statement II is true
  4. D
Statement I is true but Statement II is false

Correct answer: D

  1. Analyze Statement I

Cotton clothes are made of cellulose, which contains a large number of hydroxyl groups (−OH)(-OH)(−OH).

These −OH-OH−OH groups form extensive hydrogen bonding with water molecules. Therefore, cotton absorbs and retains more water.

Nylon, although it contains polar groups like amide linkages, does not absorb as much water as cotton.

Hence, wet cotton clothes generally take longer to dry than wet nylon clothes.

    So, Statement I is true.

  2. Analyze Statement II

Statement II says that intermolecular hydrogen bonding with water is more in nylon-based clothes than in cotton clothes.

    This is incorrect because:

    • Cotton (cellulose) has many −OH-OH−OH groups.
    • These groups form stronger and more extensive hydrogen bonding with water.
    • Nylon has fewer sites for hydrogen bonding compared to cellulose.

Therefore, intermolecular hydrogen bonding with water is greater in cotton, not nylon.

    So, Statement II is false.

  3. Choose the correct option

    • Statement I: True
    • Statement II: False

    Therefore, the correct option is:

D: Statement I is true but Statement II is false\boxed{\text{D: Statement I is true but Statement II is false}}D: Statement I is true but Statement II is false

  4. Comparison with stored correct answer

    Stored correct answer = D

    Our derived answer = D

Hence, the derived answer agrees with the stored answer.
