A molecule has zero dipole moment when the vector sum of all bond dipoles is zero. This usually happens when:

  • the molecule is symmetrical, and
  • all surrounding atoms are identical so dipoles cancel.

  • Trigonal pyramidal.
  • Dipoles do not cancel.
  • Dipole moment is non-zero.

(vi) BF3\mathrm{BF_3}BF3​

  • Trigonal planar and symmetrical.
  • Three B−F\mathrm{B-F}B−F dipoles cancel.
  • Dipole moment = 0.

(vii) CH4\mathrm{CH_4}CH4​

  • Tetrahedral and symmetrical.
  • Four identical C−H\mathrm{C-H}C−H bond dipoles cancel.
  • Dipole moment = 0.

(viii) CHCl3\mathrm{CHCl_3}CHCl3​

  • Tetrahedral, but substituents are not identical (3 Cl3\,\mathrm{Cl}3Cl and 1 H1\,\mathrm{H}1H).
  • Dipoles do not cancel.
  • Dipole moment is non-zero.

(ix) SiF4\mathrm{SiF_4}SiF4​

  • Tetrahedral and symmetrical.
  • Four identical Si−F\mathrm{Si-F}Si−F dipoles cancel.
  • Dipole moment = 0.

(x) H2O\mathrm{H_2O}H2​O

  • Bent molecule.
  • Dipoles do not cancel.
  • Dipole moment is non-zero.

(xi) BeF2\mathrm{BeF_2}BeF2​

  • Linear molecule.
  • Two equal and opposite Be−F\mathrm{Be-F}Be−F dipoles cancel.
  • Dipole moment = 0.
