  2. Count the bonds present

    • There is 1 C=C double bond between the two carbon atoms.
  3. Recall bond composition

    • A single bond contains 1 σ\sigmaσ bond.
    • A double bond contains 1 σ\sigmaσ bond + 1 π\piπ bond.
  4. Calculate total σ\sigmaσ bonds

    • From 4 C–H bonds: 4σ4\sigma4σ
    • From 1 C=C double bond: 1σ1\sigma1σ

    Total: 4+1=5σ4 + 1 = 5\sigma4+1=5σ

  5. Calculate total π\piπ bonds
