  2. B
    NO\mathrm{NO}NO and H2SO4\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{SO}_{4}H2SO4
  3. C
    SF6\mathrm{SF}_{6}SF6 and H2SO4\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{SO}_{4}H2SO4
  4. D
    BCl3\mathrm{BCl}_{3}BCl3 and NO\mathrm{NO}NO

Correct answer: B

  1. Identify what is being asked

We need the pair in which:

  • one molecule is an odd electron molecule, and
  • the other is an expanded octet molecule.

  1. Recall definitions

(i) Odd electron molecule

A molecule having an odd total number of valence electrons is called an odd electron molecule. Example: NO\mathrm{NO}NO

(ii) Expanded octet molecule

A molecule in which the central atom has more than 8 electrons in its valence shell is called an expanded octet molecule. Examples: SF6\mathrm{SF_6}SF6, H2SO4\mathrm{H_2SO_4}H2SO4 (sulfur can have expanded valency in the usual Lewis description used in JEE level chemistry).

  1. Check each relevant molecule

BCl3\mathrm{BCl_3}BCl3

Total valence electrons:

3+3×7=243 + 3\times 7 = 243+3×7=24

Boron forms 3 bonds and has only 6 electrons around it. So, BCl3\mathrm{BCl_3}BCl3 is electron-deficient, not odd-electron, and not expanded octet.

NO\mathrm{NO}NO

Total valence electrons:

5+6=115 + 6 = 115+6=11

This is odd, so NO\mathrm{NO}NO is an odd electron molecule.

SF6\mathrm{SF_6}SF6

Sulfur forms 6 bonds with fluorine, so sulfur has 12 electrons around it. Hence, SF6\mathrm{SF_6}SF6 is an expanded octet molecule.

H2SO4\mathrm{H_2SO_4}H2SO4

In the standard Lewis structure used at this level, sulfur is bonded such that it accommodates more than 8 electrons. Hence, H2SO4\mathrm{H_2SO_4}H2SO4 is also treated as an expanded octet molecule.

  1. Evaluate options

Option A: BCl3\mathrm{BCl_3}BCl3 and SF6\mathrm{SF_6}SF6

  • BCl3\mathrm{BCl_3}BCl3: not odd-electron
  • SF6\mathrm{SF_6}SF6: expanded octet

So this does not satisfy the pair.

Option B: NO\mathrm{NO}NO and H2SO4\mathrm{H_2SO_4}H2SO4

  • NO\mathrm{NO}NO: odd-electron molecule
  • H2SO4\mathrm{H_2SO_4}H2SO4: expanded octet molecule

This satisfies the requirement.

Option C: SF6\mathrm{SF_6}SF6 and H2SO4\mathrm{H_2SO_4}H2SO4

  • both are expanded octet molecules
  • no odd-electron molecule

So this is incorrect.

Option D: BCl3\mathrm{BCl_3}BCl3 and NO\mathrm{NO}NO

  • BCl3\mathrm{BCl_3}BCl3: electron-deficient
  • NO\mathrm{NO}NO: odd-electron

No expanded octet molecule here, so incorrect.

  1. Final answer

The correct pair is:

NO and H2SO4\boxed{\mathrm{NO} \text{ and } \mathrm{H_2SO_4}}NO and H2SO4

So, Option B is correct.
