For an ideal gas, internal energy is the sum over all components:

U=∑ni(fi2RT)U = \sum n_i \left(\frac{f_i}{2}RT\right)U=∑ni​(2fi​​RT)

where fif_ifi​ is the number of active degrees of freedom.


  1. For oxygen (O2O_2O2​)

Oxygen is a diatomic gas with rigid bond.

  • Translational degrees of freedom =3=3=3
  • Rotational degrees of freedom =2=2=2
  • Vibrational modes are neglected because the bond is rigid

So,

fO2=5f_{O_2}=5fO2​​=5

For 333 moles of oxygen,

UO2=3⋅52RT=152RTU_{O_2}=3\cdot \frac{5}{2}RT=\frac{15}{2}RTUO2​​=3⋅25​RT=215​RT
