Correct answer: B

  1. Find the full-scale current of the galvanometer

A galvanometer of resistance G=100 ΩG = 100\,\OmegaG=100Ω is connected in series with R=400 ΩR = 400\,\OmegaR=400Ω and the combination measures up to V=10 V.V = 10\,\text{V}.V=10V.

So the total resistance is Rtotal=100+400=500 Ω.R_{\text{total}} = 100 + 400 = 500\,\Omega.Rtotal=100+400=500Ω.

Hence the current for full-scale deflection is Ig=VRtotal=10500=0.02 A.I_g = \frac{V}{R_{\text{total}}} = \frac{10}{500} = 0.02\,\text{A}.Ig=RtotalV=50010=0.02A.

  1. Convert galvanometer into ammeter

To make an ammeter of range I=10 A,I = 10\,\text{A},I=10A, a shunt resistance SSS is connected in parallel with the galvanometer.

At full-scale reading:

  • current through galvanometer = Ig=0.02 AI_g = 0.02\,\text{A}Ig=0.02A
  • current through shunt = Is=I−Ig=10−0.02=9.98 A.I_s = I - I_g = 10 - 0.02 = 9.98\,\text{A}.Is=I−Ig=10−0.02=9.98A.

Since galvanometer and shunt are in parallel, potential difference across them is same: IgG=IsS.I_g G = I_s S.IgG=IsS.

So, S=IgGIs=0.02×1009.98=29.98≈0.2004 Ω.S = \frac{I_g G}{I_s} = \frac{0.02 \times 100}{9.98} = \frac{2}{9.98} \approx 0.2004\,\Omega.S=IsIgG=9.980.02×100=9.982≈0.2004Ω.

Thus, S≈0.2 Ω.S \approx 0.2\,\Omega.S≈0.2Ω.

  1. Match with the given form

Given, S=x×10−2 Ω.S = x \times 10^{-2}\,\Omega.S=x×10−2Ω.

So, 0.2=x×10−20.2 = x \times 10^{-2}0.2=x×10−2 x=20.x = 20.x=20.

  1. Correct option

Option B: 20\boxed{\text{Option B: } 20}Option B: 20
