  1. Decay scheme

A radioactive substance PPP decays to QQQ, and then QQQ decays to stable RRR:

P→Q→RP \rightarrow Q \rightarrow RP→Q→R

Here:

  • PPP is radioactive, so its mass decreases continuously with time.
  • QQQ is produced from PPP and destroyed by its own decay into RRR.
  • RRR is stable, so its mass keeps increasing with time.

  1. Behavior of mass of PPP

Since PPP decays radioactively, its mass falls exponentially:

mP(t)=mP0e−λ1tm_P(t) = m_{P0} e^{-\lambda_1 t}mP​(t)=mP0​e−λ1​t

So the graph of PPP must:

  • start from maximum value at t=0t=0t=0
  • decrease monotonically
  • approach zero asymptotically

  1. Behavior of mass of QQQ

At t=0t=0t=0, usually there is no QQQ initially, so:

mQ(0)=0m_Q(0)=0mQ​(0)=0

Now:

  • QQQ is being formed from decay of PPP
  • simultaneously, QQQ itself is decaying into RRR

Hence, initially QQQ increases, because production dominates. Later, after some time, decay of QQQ becomes significant and its mass decreases.

Therefore, the graph of QQQ must:

  • first increase
  • reach a maximum
  • then decrease back toward zero

So QQQ must have a hump-shaped curve.

RRR is non-radioactive, so it accumulates continuously from decay of QQQ. Thus:

  • it starts from zero
  • increases monotonically with time
  • finally approaches a constant value equal to the total initial mass (ignoring mass defect issues at this level)

So the graph of RRR must be a rising curve that saturates.
