The oxidation states of nitrogen in NONONO, NO2NO_2NO2, N2ON_2ON2O and NO 3−_3^ -3− are in the order of :
  1. A
    N2ON_2ON2O > NO2NO_2NO2 > NONONO > NO 3−_3^ -3−
  2. B
    NONONO > NO2NO_2NO2 > N2ON_2ON2O > NO 3−_3^ -3−
  3. C
    NO2NO_2NO2 > NO 3−_3^ -3− > NONONO > N2ON_2ON2O
  4. D
    NO 3−_3^ -3− > NO2NO_2NO2 > NONONO > N2ON_2ON2O

Correct answer: D

  1. Find oxidation state of nitrogen in each species

Use the rule: oxygen usually has oxidation state −2-2−2.

  1. For NONONO

Let oxidation state of nitrogen be xxx.

x+(−2)=0x + (-2) = 0x+(−2)=0 x=+2x = +2x=+2

So, in NONONO, nitrogen is +2+2+2.

  1. For NO2NO_2NO2

Let oxidation state of nitrogen be xxx.

x+2(−2)=0x + 2(-2) = 0x+2(−2)=0 x−4=0x - 4 = 0x−4=0 x=+4x = +4x=+4

So, in NO2NO_2NO2, nitrogen is +4+4+4.

  1. For N2ON_2ON2O

Let average oxidation state of nitrogen be xxx.

2x+(−2)=02x + (-2) = 02x+(−2)=0 2x=+22x = +22x=+2 x=+1x = +1x=+1

So, in N2ON_2ON2O, the average oxidation state of nitrogen is +1+1+1.

  1. For NO3−NO_3^-NO3−

Let oxidation state of nitrogen be xxx.

x+3(−2)=−1x + 3(-2) = -1x+3(−2)=−1 x−6=−1x - 6 = -1x−6=−1 x=+5x = +5x=+5

So, in NO3−NO_3^-NO3−, nitrogen is +5+5+5.

  1. Arrange in decreasing order

We have:

  • NO3−:+5NO_3^- : +5NO3−:+5
  • NO2:+4NO_2 : +4NO2:+4
  • NO:+2NO : +2NO:+2
  • N2O:+1N_2O : +1N2O:+1

Therefore, the order is:

NO3−>NO2>NO>N2ONO_3^- > NO_2 > NO > N_2ONO3−>NO2>NO>N2O

This corresponds to Option D.

  1. Comparison with stored answer

Stored correct answer: D

Derived answer: D

So, the derived answer agrees with the stored answer.
