Correct answer: C

  1. Use standard oxidation numbers

    For these neutral molecules:

    • Hydrogen has oxidation state +1+1+1
    • Oxygen has oxidation state −2-2−2
    • Let the oxidation state of each phosphorus atom be xxx on average

    Since the molecule is neutral, the sum of oxidation states is zero.

  2. For H4P2O7H_4P_2O_7H4P2O7

    Let oxidation state of P be xxx.

    4(+1)+2x+7(−2)=04(+1) + 2x + 7(-2) = 04(+1)+2x+7(−2)=0

    4+2x−14=04 + 2x - 14 = 04+2x−14=0

    2x−10=02x - 10 = 02x−10=0

    2x=102x = 102x=10

    x=5x = 5x=5

    So, in H4P2O7H_4P_2O_7H4P2O7, phosphorus has oxidation state +5+5+5.

  3. For H4P2O5H_4P_2O_5H4P2O5

    4(+1)+2x+5(−2)=04(+1) + 2x + 5(-2) = 04(+1)+2x+5(−2)=0

    4+2x−10=04 + 2x - 10 = 04+2x−10=0

    2x−6=02x - 6 = 02x−6=0

    2x=62x = 62x=6

    x=3x = 3x=3

    So, in H4P2O5H_4P_2O_5H4P2O5, phosphorus has oxidation state +3+3+3.

  4. For H4P2O6H_4P_2O_6H4P2O6

    4(+1)+2x+6(−2)=04(+1) + 2x + 6(-2) = 04(+1)+2x+6(−2)=0

    4+2x−12=04 + 2x - 12 = 04+2x−12=0

    2x−8=02x - 8 = 02x−8=0

    2x=82x = 82x=8

    x=4x = 4x=4

    So, in H4P2O6H_4P_2O_6H4P2O6, phosphorus has oxidation state +4+4+4.

  5. Final sequence

    The oxidation states are:

    5,3,4

    This matches Option C.

  6. Comparison with stored answer

    Stored correct answer: C

    Derived answer: C

    Hence, they agree.
