Correct answer: C

  1. What does “oxidizing behaviour of H2SO4H_2SO_4H2SO4” mean?
A substance shows oxidizing behaviour when it oxidizes another substance and itself gets reduced.

  2. Check each reaction for redox change.

Option A: NaCl+H2SO4→NaHSO4+HClNaCl + H_2SO_4 \to NaHSO_4 + HClNaCl+H2SO4→NaHSO4+HCl This is simply an acid-salt reaction. No oxidation numbers change. So this is not oxidizing behaviour.

Option B: 2PCl5+H2SO4→2POCl3+2HCl+SO2Cl22PCl_5 + H_2SO_4 \to 2POCl_3 + 2HCl + SO_2Cl_22PCl5+H2SO4→2POCl3+2HCl+SO2Cl2 Here also there is no clear oxidation-reduction involving sulfuric acid as oxidizing agent. It is mainly a chemical transformation/chlorination-type reaction, not the usual oxidizing action of H2SO4H_2SO_4H2SO4.

    Option C: 2HI+H2SO4→I2+SO2+2H2O2HI + H_2SO_4 \to I_2 + SO_2 + 2H_2O2HI+H2SO4→I2+SO2+2H2O Now check oxidation states:

    • In HIHIHI, iodine is −1-1−1.

    • In I2I_2I2, iodine is 000. So iodine is oxidized: I−→I2I^- \to I_2I−→I2

    • In H2SO4H_2SO_4H2SO4, sulfur is +6+6+6.

    • In SO2SO_2SO2, sulfur is +4+4+4. So sulfur is reduced: S+6→S+4S^{+6} \to S^{+4}S+6→S+4

Therefore, H2SO4H_2SO_4H2SO4 oxidizes HIHIHI to I2I_2I2 and itself gets reduced to SO2SO_2SO2. Hence, this reaction clearly shows the oxidizing behaviour of H2SO4H_2SO_4H2SO4.

Option D: Ca(OH)2+H2SO4→CaSO4+2H2OCa(OH)_2 + H_2SO_4 \to CaSO_4 + 2H_2OCa(OH)2+H2SO4→CaSO4+2H2O This is a neutralization reaction. No change in oxidation states. So this is not oxidizing behaviour.

  3. Conclusion Only Option C represents the oxidizing behaviour of H2SO4H_2SO_4H2SO4.

  4. Comparison with stored correct answer Stored correct answer: C
    Derived answer: C
    They match.
