Redox Reactions question

2025 · 28 Jan · Shift 1 · Q9

JEE MainChemistryRedox ReactionsMCQ+4 / −1
Given below are two statements: Statement I: In the oxalic acid vs KMnO4\mathrm{KMnO}_4KMnO4(in the presence of dil H2SO4\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{SO}_4H2SO4) titration the solution needs to be heated initially to 60∘C60^{\circ} \mathrm{C}60∘C, but no heating is required in Ferrous ammonium sulphate (FAS) vs KMnO4\mathrm{KMnO}_4KMnO4 titration (in the presence of dil H2SO4\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{SO}_4H2SO4) Statement II: In oxalic acid vs KMnO4\mathrm{KMnO}_4KMnO4 titration, the initial formation of MnSO4\mathrm{MnSO}_4MnSO4 takes place at high temperature, which then acts as catalyst for further reaction. In the case of FAS vs KMnO4\mathrm{KMnO}_4KMnO4, heating oxidizes Fe2+\mathrm{Fe}^{2+}Fe2+ into Fe3+\mathrm{Fe}^{3+}Fe3+ by oxygen of air and error may be introduced in the experiment. In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below
  1. A
Statement I is false but Statement II is true
  2. B
Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  3. C
Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  4. D
Both Statement I and Statement II are false

Correct answer: C

  1. Analyze Statement I

We compare two permanganate titrations in acidic medium:

    • Oxalic acid vs. KMnO4\mathrm{KMnO_4}KMnO4 in dilute H2SO4\mathrm{H_2SO_4}H2SO4
    • FAS (Fe2+\mathrm{Fe^{2+}}Fe2+) vs. KMnO4\mathrm{KMnO_4}KMnO4 in dilute H2SO4\mathrm{H_2SO_4}H2SO4

    The relevant reactions are:

    2MnO4−+5C2O42−+16H+→2Mn2++10CO2+8H2O2\mathrm{MnO_4^-} + 5\mathrm{C_2O_4^{2-}} + 16\mathrm{H^+} \rightarrow 2\mathrm{Mn^{2+}} + 10\mathrm{CO_2} + 8\mathrm{H_2O}2MnO4−+5C2O42−+16H+→2Mn2++10CO2+8H2O

    and

    MnO4−+5Fe2++8H+→Mn2++5Fe3++4H2O\mathrm{MnO_4^-} + 5\mathrm{Fe^{2+}} + 8\mathrm{H^+} \rightarrow \mathrm{Mn^{2+}} + 5\mathrm{Fe^{3+}} + 4\mathrm{H_2O}MnO4−+5Fe2++8H+→Mn2++5Fe3++4H2O

    • The oxidation of oxalic acid/oxalate by permanganate is slow at room temperature.
    • Hence, the oxalic acid titration is started warm, around 60∘C60^\circ\mathrm{C}60∘C.
    • In contrast, oxidation of Fe2+\mathrm{Fe^{2+}}Fe2+ by permanganate is sufficiently fast at room temperature, so no initial heating is required.

    Therefore, Statement I is true.

  2. Analyze Statement II

    • In oxalic acid vs. KMnO4\mathrm{KMnO_4}KMnO4 titration, the reaction is initially slow.
    • As the reaction begins, Mn2+\mathrm{Mn^{2+}}Mn2+ is produced (present as MnSO4\mathrm{MnSO_4}MnSO4 in sulfuric acid medium).
    • This Mn2+\mathrm{Mn^{2+}}Mn2+ acts as an autocatalyst, accelerating the reaction.
    • Initial warming helps generate enough Mn2+\mathrm{Mn^{2+}}Mn2+ to start this catalytic cycle.

So the first part of Statement II is correct.

    Now for FAS:

    • On heating, Fe2+\mathrm{Fe^{2+}}Fe2+ can get oxidized by atmospheric oxygen to Fe3+\mathrm{Fe^{3+}}Fe3+.
    • This changes the amount of reductant actually available for titration and introduces error.
    • Therefore FAS titration is not heated.

Hence, Statement II is also true.

  3. Choose the correct option

    Since both statements are true:

    Option C\boxed{\text{Option C}}Option C

  4. Compare with stored correct answer

    • Derived answer: C
    • Stored correct answer: C

    They match.
