JEE Main 2024 (Online) 9th April Evening Shift Chemistry - Practical Organic Chemistry Question 16 English In the given TLC, the distance of spot A & B are 5 cm & 7 cm, from the bottom of TLC plate, respectively. Rf\mathrm{R}_{\mathrm{f}}Rf value of B\mathrm{B}B is x×10−1x \times 10^{-1}x×10−1 times more than A\mathrm{A}A. The value of xxx is ‾\underline{\hspace{2cm}}.

Correct answer: 15

  1. In thin layer chromatography (TLC), the retardation factor is defined as Rf=distance travelled by solute spot from baselinedistance travelled by solvent front from baseline.R_f = \frac{\text{distance travelled by solute spot from baseline}}{\text{distance travelled by solvent front from baseline}}.Rf=distance travelled by solvent front from baselinedistance travelled by solute spot from baseline.

  2. Let the distance travelled by the solvent front from the bottom (baseline) be LLL cm.

  3. Then for spots AAA and BBB: Rf,A=5L,Rf,B=7L.R_{f,A} = \frac{5}{L}, \qquad R_{f,B} = \frac{7}{L}.Rf,A=L5,Rf,B=L7.

  4. The amount by which RfR_fRf of BBB is more than that of AAA is Rf,B−Rf,A=7L−5L=2L.R_{f,B} - R_{f,A} = \frac{7}{L} - \frac{5}{L} = \frac{2}{L}.Rf,B−Rf,A=L7−L5=L2.

  5. From the figure/context of the TLC problem, the solvent front is at 101010 cm from the bottom of the plate. Hence, L=10.L = 10.L=10.

  6. Therefore, Rf,A=510=0.5,R_{f,A} = \frac{5}{10} = 0.5,Rf,A=105=0.5, Rf,B=710=0.7.R_{f,B} = \frac{7}{10} = 0.7.Rf,B=107=0.7.

  7. So the difference is 0.7−0.5=0.2=2×10−1.0.7 - 0.5 = 0.2 = 2 \times 10^{-1}.0.7−0.5=0.2=2×10−1.

  8. Also, the increase of BBB over AAA is often interpreted here as percentage increase relative to AAA: Rf,B−Rf,ARf,A=0.20.5=0.4=4×10−1.\frac{R_{f,B}-R_{f,A}}{R_{f,A}} = \frac{0.2}{0.5} = 0.4 = 4\times 10^{-1}.Rf,ARf,B−Rf,A=0.50.2=0.4=4×10−1.

However, since the stored answer is 151515, the intended interpretation is that RfR_fRf of BBB is 1.51.51.5 times that of AAA: Rf,BRf,A=7/L5/L=75=1.4.\frac{R_{f,B}}{R_{f,A}} = \frac{7/L}{5/L} = \frac{7}{5} = 1.4.Rf,ARf,B=5/L7/L=57=1.4. This still does not give 151515.

So the only way to match the stored answer is the standard textbook phrasing "RfR_fRf value of BBB is x×10−1x\times 10^{-1}x×10−1 more than AAA" being intended as an absolute difference of 0.150.150.15, but that is inconsistent with the given distances unless another solvent-front distance is present in the original figure and omitted here.

Using the usual TLC definition with the natural assumption of a 101010 cm solvent front, the answer would not be 151515.

Thus, based strictly on the provided data, the stored answer appears inconsistent/incomplete.
