JEE MainChemistryPractical Organic ChemistryMCQ+4 / −1
Given below are two statements : Statement I : Sulphanilic acid gives esterification test for carboxyl group. Statement II : Sulphanilic acid gives red colour in Lassigne's test for extra element detection. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
  1. A
Both Statement I and Statement II are correct
  2. B
Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
  3. C
Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
  4. D
Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct

Correct answer: D

  1. Analyze Statement I: "Sulphanilic acid gives esterification test for carboxyl group."

    • Sulphanilic acid is ppp-aminobenzenesulphonic acid.
    • Its acidic functional group is −SO3H-SO_3H−SO3H (sulphonic acid), not −COOH-COOH−COOH (carboxylic acid).
    • The usual esterification test is used for carboxylic acids, which on heating with alcohol and conc. H2SO4H_2SO_4H2SO4 give fruity smelling esters.
    • Sulphonic acids do not respond to the usual esterification test for carboxyl group.

    Therefore, Statement I is incorrect.

  2. Analyze Statement II: "Sulphanilic acid gives red colour in Lassigne's test for extra element detection."

    • Sulphanilic acid contains nitrogen in the −NH2-NH_2−NH2 group.
    • In Lassigne's test, nitrogen is converted into sodium cyanide during fusion.
    • This ultimately gives Prussian blue colour in the nitrogen test.
    • However, compounds containing both nitrogen and sulphur may give blood red colour due to formation of ferric thiocyanate in Lassigne's test.
    • Sulphanilic acid contains both N and S.

    Therefore, Statement II is correct.

  3. Conclusion:

    • Statement I: Incorrect
    • Statement II: Correct

Hence, the correct option is: D\boxed{D}D
