JEE MainChemistryPeriodic Table and PeriodicityMCQ+4 / −1
Given below are two statements: Statement - I: Along the period, the chemical reactivity of the elements gradually increases from group 1 to group 18 . Statement - II: The nature of oxides formed by group 1 elements is basic while that of group 17 elements is acidic. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate from the options given below:
  1. A
Statement I is False but Statement II is true
  2. B
Both Statement I and Statement II are False
  3. C
Statement I is True But Statement II is False
  4. D
Both Statement I and Statement II are True

Correct answer: A

  1. Analyze Statement I

Statement I says: Along a period, the chemical reactivity of the elements gradually increases from group 1 to group 18.

    This is not correct.

    • In a period, metallic character decreases from left to right.
    • For metals, reactivity generally decreases from left to right.
    • For non-metals, reactivity generally increases from left to right up to group 17.
    • Group 18 elements (noble gases) are generally least reactive.

So reactivity does not gradually increase continuously from group 1 to group 18.

    Hence, Statement I is false.

  2. Analyze Statement II

Statement II says: The nature of oxides formed by group 1 elements is basic while that of group 17 elements is acidic.

    This is true.

    • Group 1 elements are alkali metals and form strongly basic oxides such as: Na2O, K2O\mathrm{Na_2O,\, K_2O}Na2O,K2O
    • Group 17 elements are halogens, and their oxides are generally acidic in nature, for example: Cl2O7\mathrm{Cl_2O_7}Cl2O7 which forms perchloric acid with water.

    Hence, Statement II is true.

  3. Evaluate options

    • A: Statement I is False but Statement II is true ✅
    • B: Both Statement I and Statement II are False ❌
    • C: Statement I is True But Statement II is False ❌
    • D: Both Statement I and Statement II are True ❌
  4. Final Answer

    The correct option is: A\boxed{\text{A}}A

  5. Comparison with stored correct answer

    Stored correct answer = A

    My derived answer = A

So, the answer agrees with the stored correct answer.
