Given below are two statements: one is labelled as Assertion A\mathbf{A}A and the other is labelled as Reason R\mathbf{R}R Assertion A : The energy required to form Mg2+\mathrm{Mg}^{2+}Mg2+ from Mg\mathrm{Mg}Mg is much higher than that required to produce Mg+\mathrm{Mg}^+Mg+ Reason R:Mg2+\mathbf{R}: \mathrm{Mg}^{2+}R:Mg2+ is small ion and carry more charge than Mg+\mathrm{Mg}^{+}Mg+ In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.
  1. A
A is false but R is true
  2. B
Both A and R are correct but R is NOT the correct explanation of A
  3. C
Both A and R are correct and R is the correct explanation of A
  4. D
A is true but R is false

Correct answer: C

  1. Interpret the assertion

To form Mg2+\mathrm{Mg}^{2+}Mg2+ from Mg\mathrm{Mg}Mg, two electrons must be removed:

Mg→Mg++e−(first ionization enthalpy)\mathrm{Mg} \rightarrow \mathrm{Mg}^+ + e^- \quad (\text{first ionization enthalpy})Mg→Mg++e−(first ionization enthalpy) Mg+→Mg2++e−(second ionization enthalpy)\mathrm{Mg}^+ \rightarrow \mathrm{Mg}^{2+} + e^- \quad (\text{second ionization enthalpy})Mg+→Mg2++e−(second ionization enthalpy)

The total energy required to form Mg2+\mathrm{Mg}^{2+}Mg2+ from Mg\mathrm{Mg}Mg is:

IE1+IE2IE_1 + IE_2IE1+IE2

whereas to form Mg+\mathrm{Mg}^+Mg+ from Mg\mathrm{Mg}Mg, only IE1IE_1IE1 is needed.

Since removing the second electron from the already positively charged ion Mg+\mathrm{Mg}^+Mg+ is much harder than removing the first electron, the energy needed to form Mg2+\mathrm{Mg}^{2+}Mg2+ is much higher.

So, Assertion A is true.

  1. Interpret the reason

The reason says:

  • Mg2+\mathrm{Mg}^{2+}Mg2+ is a smaller ion than Mg+\mathrm{Mg}^+Mg+
  • Mg2+\mathrm{Mg}^{2+}Mg2+ carries more positive charge than Mg+\mathrm{Mg}^+Mg+

This is correct. Greater positive charge and smaller size mean stronger attraction between the nucleus and the remaining electrons. Therefore, removing an electron from Mg+\mathrm{Mg}^+Mg+ to form Mg2+\mathrm{Mg}^{2+}Mg2+ requires more energy.

So, Reason R is also true.

  1. Check whether R explains A

Yes. The second electron is removed from Mg+\mathrm{Mg}^+Mg+, and due to higher effective attraction in the smaller/more highly charged ion, this removal requires much more energy. Hence the formation of Mg2+\mathrm{Mg}^{2+}Mg2+ from Mg\mathrm{Mg}Mg needs much more energy than formation of Mg+\mathrm{Mg}^+Mg+ from Mg\mathrm{Mg}Mg.

Thus, R is the correct explanation of A.

  1. Evaluate options
  • A: A is false but R is true →\rightarrow→ incorrect
  • B: Both A and R are correct but R is NOT the correct explanation of A →\rightarrow→ incorrect
  • C: Both A and R are correct and R is the correct explanation of A →\rightarrow→ correct
  • D: A is true but R is false →\rightarrow→ incorrect

Therefore, the correct option is:

C\boxed{C}C
  1. Comparison with stored correct answer

Stored correct answer: CCC

My derived answer: CCC

They match.
