Given below are two statements : Statement I : The electronegativity of group 14 elements from Si\mathrm{Si}Si to Pb\mathrm{Pb}Pb, gradually decreases. Statement II : Group 14 contains non-metallic, metallic, as well as metalloid elements. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate from the options given below :

    Statement I says: The electronegativity of group 14 elements from Si\mathrm{Si}Si to Pb\mathrm{Pb}Pb gradually decreases.

    Group 14 elements are: C, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb\mathrm{C,\ Si,\ Ge,\ Sn,\ Pb}C, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb

    Considering from Si\mathrm{Si}Si to Pb\mathrm{Pb}Pb, the electronegativity values do not decrease gradually in a regular manner.

    Approximate Pauling electronegativities are: Si≈1.90,Ge≈2.01,Sn≈1.96,Pb≈2.33\mathrm{Si} \approx 1.90,\quad Ge \approx 2.01,\quad Sn \approx 1.96,\quad Pb \approx 2.33Si≈1.90,Ge≈2.01,Sn≈1.96,Pb≈2.33

    So the trend is not a steady decrease:

    • Si→Ge\mathrm{Si} \to GeSi→Ge: increases
    • Ge→Sn\mathrm{Ge} \to SnGe→Sn: decreases slightly
    • Sn→Pb\mathrm{Sn} \to PbSn→Pb: increases

  2. Examine Statement II

    Statement II says: Group 14 contains non-metallic, metallic, as well as metalloid elements.

    Check the members:
