P Block Elements question

2024 · 8 Apr · Shift 1 · Q3

JEE MainChemistryP Block ElementsMCQ+4 / −1
Give below are two statements: One is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R: Assertion A: The stability order of +1 oxidation state of Ga\mathrm{Ga}Ga, In and Tl\mathrm{Tl}Tl is Ga Reason R: The inert pair effect stabilizes the lower oxidation state down the group. In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:
  1. A
A is true but R is false.
  2. B
Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A.
  3. C
A is false but R is true.
  4. D
Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

Correct answer: D

  1. Identify the trend involved

    Group 13 elements here are Ga\mathrm{Ga}Ga, In\mathrm{In}In and Tl\mathrm{Tl}Tl.

They commonly show oxidation states +3+3+3 and +1+1+1.

  2. Understand the inert pair effect

Down the group, the outer ns2ns^2ns2 electrons become increasingly reluctant to participate in bonding. This is called the inert pair effect.

Hence, the lower oxidation state becomes more stable down the group.

So for Group 13: +1 state stability increases down the group+1\text{ state stability increases down the group}+1 state stability increases down the group Therefore, Ga(+1)<In(+1)<Tl(+1)\mathrm{Ga}(+1) < \mathrm{In}(+1) < \mathrm{Tl}(+1)Ga(+1)<In(+1)<Tl(+1)

  3. Check Assertion A

Assertion A states that the stability order of +1+1+1 oxidation state of Ga,In\mathrm{Ga}, \mathrm{In}Ga,In and Tl\mathrm{Tl}Tl is increasing down the group, i.e. Ga<In<Tl\mathrm{Ga} < \mathrm{In} < \mathrm{Tl}Ga<In<Tl This is true.

  4. Check Reason R

Reason R says: The inert pair effect stabilizes the lower oxidation state down the group.

This is exactly the known reason for the increasing stability of the +1+1+1 state in Group 13.

    So R is true.

  5. Check whether R explains A

Since the inert pair effect is the reason why +1+1+1 oxidation state becomes more stable from Ga\mathrm{Ga}Ga to Tl\mathrm{Tl}Tl, R is the correct explanation of A.

  6. Choose the correct option

Therefore, the correct option is: D\boxed{\text{D}}D

  7. Compare with stored answer

    Stored correct answer = D\text{D}D.

My derived answer also = D\text{D}D, so they agree.
