The correct statements from the following are : (A) The decreasing order of atomic radii of group 13 elements is Tl>In>Ga>Al>B\mathrm{Tl}\gt \mathrm{In}\gt \mathrm{Ga}\gt \mathrm{Al}\gt \mathrm{B}Tl>In>Ga>Al>B. (B) Down the group 13 electronegativity decreases from top to bottom. (C) Al\mathrm{Al}Al dissolves in dil. HCl\mathrm{HCl}HCl and liberates H2\mathrm{H}_2H2 but conc. HNO3\mathrm{HNO}_3HNO3 renders Al\mathrm{Al}Al passive by forming a protective oxide layer on the surface. (D) All elements of group 13 exhibits highly stable +1 oxidation state. (E) Hybridisation of Al\mathrm{Al}Al in [Al(H2O)6]3+[\mathrm{Al}(\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O})_6]^{3+}[Al(H2O)6]3+ ion is sp3d2\mathrm{sp}^3 \mathrm{d}^2sp3d2. Choose the correct answer from the options given below :
  1. A
    (A), (B), (C) and (E) only
  2. B

Correct answer: B

  1. Check statement (A): atomic radii order in group 13

Group 13 elements are B,Al,Ga,In,Tl\mathrm{B, Al, Ga, In, Tl}B,Al,Ga,In,Tl.

Due to poor shielding by ddd and fff electrons, the size trend is not perfectly regular. In particular:

    • Ga\mathrm{Ga}Ga is smaller than expected and is very close to/almost equal to Al\mathrm{Al}Al due to ddd-block contraction.
    • Tl\mathrm{Tl}Tl is close to In\mathrm{In}In because of lanthanoid contraction.

The simple decreasing order Tl>In>Ga>Al>B\mathrm{Tl > In > Ga > Al > B}Tl>In>Ga>Al>B is not correct, because generally Al\mathrm{Al}Al is slightly larger than Ga\mathrm{Ga}Ga.

    So, (A) is false.

  2. Check statement (B): electronegativity decreases from top to bottom

In group 13, electronegativity does not decrease regularly down the group. Approximate trend: B>Al<Ga≈In<Tl\mathrm{B} > \mathrm{Al} < \mathrm{Ga} \approx \mathrm{In} < \mathrm{Tl}B>Al<Ga≈In<Tl There are irregularities because of poor shielding by intervening ddd and fff electrons.

Hence the statement "down the group 13 electronegativity decreases from top to bottom" is false.

  3. Check statement (C): behavior of Al with acids

    • Aluminum dissolves in dilute HCl\mathrm{HCl}HCl: 2Al+6HCl→2AlCl3+3H22\mathrm{Al} + 6\mathrm{HCl} \rightarrow 2\mathrm{AlCl}_3 + 3\mathrm{H}_22Al+6HCl→2AlCl3+3H2
    • Concentrated HNO3\mathrm{HNO}_3HNO3 makes Al passive by forming a protective oxide film on the surface.

    Therefore, (C) is true.

  4. Check statement (D): all group 13 elements exhibit highly stable +1 oxidation state

Group 13 elements generally show +3 oxidation state. The +1 oxidation state becomes more stable only for heavier members due to the inert pair effect, especially for Tl\mathrm{Tl}Tl.

Thus, it is wrong to say that all group 13 elements exhibit highly stable +1+1+1 oxidation state.

    So, (D) is false.

  5. Check statement (E): hybridisation in [Al(H2O)6]3+[\mathrm{Al}(\mathrm{H_2O})_6]^{3+}[Al(H2O)6]3+

In the hexaaqua complex, Al is coordinated by 6 water molecules, so the coordination number is 6. Such a structure is octahedral, and in classical hybridisation language this is written as: sp3d2\mathrm{sp}^3\mathrm{d}^2sp3d2

    Therefore, (E) is true.

  6. Collect the correct statements

    • (A) False
    • (B) False
    • (C) True
    • (D) False
    • (E) True

Hence the correct set is: (C) and (E) only\boxed{(C)\text{ and }(E)\text{ only}}(C) and (E) only

  7. Match with options

    This corresponds to Option B.
