Correct answer: B

  1. Meaning of proton affinity

Proton affinity is the tendency of a molecule to accept a proton, i.e. to act as a Lewis base toward H+H^+H+.
Greater proton affinity means the species is more basic in the gas phase.

  2. Given species

    We compare:

    • H2SH_2SH2S
    • NH3NH_3NH3
    • PH3PH_3PH3
    • H2OH_2OH2O

All of these contain a lone pair, so each can accept a proton.

  3. Key idea for comparison

Proton affinity depends mainly on how available the lone pair is for donation.

    • A more available lone pair ⇒\Rightarrow⇒ higher basicity ⇒\Rightarrow⇒ higher proton affinity.
    • Smaller, more electronegative atoms hold the lone pair more tightly.
    • Very weak overlap / inert pair character in heavier hydrides can also reduce basicity.
  4. Compare the hydrides

    (i) NH3NH_3NH3 vs PH3PH_3PH3

NH3NH_3NH3 is much more basic than PH3PH_3PH3.

In PH3PH_3PH3, the lone pair is in a larger, more diffuse orbital and is less effectively available for bonding; hence PH3PH_3PH3 is a much weaker base.

    Therefore, NH3>PH3NH_3 > PH_3NH3>PH3 in proton affinity.

    (ii) H2OH_2OH2O vs H2SH_2SH2S

Between group 16 hydrides, H2OH_2OH2O is more basic than H2SH_2SH2S in terms of proton affinity. Sulfur is larger and the bonding/lone-pair characteristics make H2SH_2SH2S a weaker base than water.

    Therefore, H2O>H2SH_2O > H_2SH2O>H2S in proton affinity.

  5. Now compare NH3NH_3NH3 and H2OH_2OH2O

Nitrogen is less electronegative than oxygen, so the lone pair on NNN in NH3NH_3NH3 is held less tightly and is more available for protonation.

    Hence, NH3>H2ONH_3 > H_2ONH3>H2O in proton affinity.

  6. Overall order

    The approximate order is: NH3>H2O>H2S>PH3NH_3 > H_2O > H_2S > PH_3NH3>H2O>H2S>PH3 (or NH3NH_3NH3 clearly highest among the given options).

  7. Correct option

Therefore, the substance with the highest proton affinity is: NH3\boxed{NH_3}NH3

    So, Option B is correct.
