JEE MainChemistryElectrochemistryMCQ+4 / −1
Given below are two statements : Statement (I) : Corrosion is an electrochemical phenomenon in which pure metal acts as an anode and impure metal as a cathode. Statement (II) : The rate of corrosion is more in alkaline medium than in acidic medium. In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
  1. A
Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  2. B
Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  3. C
Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  4. D
Statement I is false but Statement II is true

Correct answer: C

  1. Analyze Statement (I)

Corrosion is an electrochemical process. In a metal surface containing impurities or regions of different composition, tiny galvanic cells are formed.

    • The pure metal or the more reactive part generally acts as the anode and gets oxidized: M→Mn++ne−M \rightarrow M^{n+} + ne^-M→Mn++ne−
    • The impure part or less reactive region acts as the cathode.

    Hence, Statement (I) is true.

  2. Analyze Statement (II)

Corrosion is generally faster in acidic medium than in alkaline medium because acidic medium facilitates the cathodic reaction, often involving hydrogen ion reduction: 2H++2e−→H22H^+ + 2e^- \rightarrow H_22H++2e−→H2

In alkaline medium, corrosion is usually less rapid for many metals because protective oxide/hydroxide films may form.

Therefore, the statement "The rate of corrosion is more in alkaline medium than in acidic medium" is false.

    So, Statement (II) is false.

  3. Choose the correct option

    • Statement (I): True
    • Statement (II): False

Therefore, the correct option is: C\boxed{\text{C}}C

  4. Comparison with stored correct answer

    Stored correct answer = C

    My derived answer = C

    They agree.
