Which one of the following statements is correct for electrolysis of brine solution?
  1. A
    O2\mathrm{O}_{2}O2 is formed at cathode
  2. B
    H2\mathrm{H}_{2}H2 is formed at anode
  3. C
    Cl2\mathrm{Cl}_{2}Cl2 is formed at cathode
  4. D
    OH−\mathrm{OH}^{-}OH− is formed at cathode

Correct answer: D

  1. Identify the process: electrolysis of brine

Brine is an aqueous solution of sodium chloride, i.e. NaCl(aq) \mathrm{NaCl(aq)}NaCl(aq).

During electrolysis, the ions/species present are mainly:

  • Na+\mathrm{Na^+}Na+
  • Cl−\mathrm{Cl^-}Cl−
  • H2O\mathrm{H_2O}H2O
  1. Reaction at the cathode (reduction)

At the cathode, reduction occurs. The possible reductions are:

  • Na++e−→Na\mathrm{Na^+ + e^- \to Na}Na++e−→Na
  • Reduction of water: 2H2O+2e−→H2+2OH−2\mathrm{H_2O} + 2e^- \to \mathrm{H_2} + 2\mathrm{OH^-}2H2O+2e−→H2+2OH−

In aqueous solution, Na+\mathrm{Na^+}Na+ is not discharged preferentially; instead, water is reduced.

So, at the cathode: 2H2O+2e−→H2+2OH−2\mathrm{H_2O} + 2e^- \to \mathrm{H_2} + 2\mathrm{OH^-}2H2O+2e−→H2+2OH−

Thus, OH−\mathrm{OH^-}OH− is formed at the cathode.

  1. Reaction at the anode (oxidation)

At the anode, oxidation occurs. In brine, chloride ions are oxidized: 2Cl−→Cl2+2e−2\mathrm{Cl^-} \to \mathrm{Cl_2} + 2e^-2Cl−→Cl2+2e−

So, Cl2\mathrm{Cl_2}Cl2 is formed at the anode, not at the cathode.

  1. Check each option
  • A: O2\mathrm{O_2}O2 is formed at cathode
False. Oxygen is not formed at cathode.

  • B: H2\mathrm{H_2}H2 is formed at anode
False. Hydrogen is formed at cathode.

  • C: Cl2\mathrm{Cl_2}Cl2 is formed at cathode
False. Chlorine is formed at anode.

  • D: OH−\mathrm{OH^-}OH− is formed at cathode
    True.

  1. Conclusion

The correct statement is: D: OH− is formed at cathode\boxed{\text{D: } \mathrm{OH^-} \text{ is formed at cathode}}D: OH− is formed at cathode

  1. Comparison with stored correct answer

Stored correct answer = D
Derived answer = D

They match.
