Correct answer: 5

  1. We are given a cobalt(III) ammine chloride complex of the form CoCl3⋅xNH3CoCl_3\cdot xNH_3CoCl3⋅xNH3 and it is treated with aqueous AgNO3AgNO_3AgNO3.

  2. AgNO3AgNO_3AgNO3 precipitates only those chloride ions which are present as ionisable chloride ions outside the coordination sphere: Ag++Cl−→AgCl↓Ag^+ + Cl^- \to AgCl\downarrowAg++Cl−→AgCl↓

  3. Since two equivalents of AgClAgClAgCl are obtained, there must be two chloride ions outside the coordination sphere.

  4. Total number of chloride ions in CoCl3⋅xNH3CoCl_3\cdot xNH_3CoCl3⋅xNH3 is 3.
If 2 are outside, then 1 chloride ion must be inside the coordination sphere.

  5. Cobalt(III) generally has coordination number 6 in such ammine complexes. So the coordination sphere must contain:

    • 1 coordinated Cl−Cl^-Cl−
    • xxx coordinated NH3NH_3NH3

    Therefore, x+1=6x + 1 = 6x+1=6

  6. Solving: x=5x = 5x=5

  7. Hence the complex is: [Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl2[Co(NH_3)_5Cl]Cl_2[Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl2 which indeed gives 2 moles of AgClAgClAgCl with AgNO3AgNO_3AgNO3.

Therefore, the required value is: 5\boxed{5}5
