D and F Block Elements question

2021 · 16 Mar · Shift 1 · Q5

JEE MainChemistryD and F Block ElementsMCQ+4 / −1
Given below are two statements : Statement I : The Eo value for Ce4+Ce^{4+}Ce4+ / Ce3+Ce^{3+}Ce3+ is + 1.74 V. Statement II : Ce is more stable in Ce4+Ce^{4+}Ce4+ state than Ce3+Ce^{3+}Ce3+ state. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
  1. A
Statement I is incorrect but statement II is correct
  2. B
Both statement I and statement II are correct
  3. C
Both statement I and statement II are incorrect
  4. D
Statement I is correct but statement II is incorrect

Correct answer: D

  1. Evaluate Statement I

    For lanthanoids, the standard reduction potential for the couple Ce4++e−→Ce3+Ce^{4+} + e^- \rightarrow Ce^{3+}Ce4++e−→Ce3+ is known to be E∘=+1.74 VE^\circ = +1.74\,\text{V}E∘=+1.74V

    Hence, Statement I is correct.

  2. Evaluate Statement II

    Cerium has electronic configuration: Ce:[Xe]4f15d16s2Ce: [Xe]4f^1 5d^1 6s^2Ce:[Xe]4f15d16s2

Common oxidation states are +3+3+3 and +4+4+4.

    • Ce3+Ce^{3+}Ce3+ has configuration: [Xe]4f1[Xe]4f^1[Xe]4f1
    • Ce4+Ce^{4+}Ce4+ has configuration: [Xe][Xe][Xe]

Although Ce4+Ce^{4+}Ce4+ attains a noble-gas-like configuration and is important in some compounds, in aqueous/redox terms the very high positive value E∘(Ce4+/Ce3+)=+1.74 VE^\circ(Ce^{4+}/Ce^{3+}) = +1.74\,\text{V}E∘(Ce4+/Ce3+)=+1.74V shows that Ce4+Ce^{4+}Ce4+ is strongly prone to get reduced to Ce3+Ce^{3+}Ce3+.

Therefore, Ce3+Ce^{3+}Ce3+ is more stable than Ce4+Ce^{4+}Ce4+ in general redox sense, and Statement II is incorrect.

  3. Conclusion

    • Statement I: Correct
    • Statement II: Incorrect

Therefore, the correct option is: D\boxed{\text{D}}D
