JEE MainChemistryD and F Block ElementsMCQ+4 / −1
The Eu2+Eu^{2+}Eu2+ ion is a strong reducing agent in spite of its ground state electronic configuration (outermost) : [Atomic number of Eu = 63]
  1. A
    4f76s2
  2. B
    4f6
  3. C
    4f7
  4. D
    4f66s2

Correct answer: C

  1. Find the electronic configuration of europium, Z=63Z=63Z=63

Neutral europium has configuration: [Xe]4f76s2[Xe]4f^7 6s^2[Xe]4f76s2

  2. Write the configuration of Eu2+Eu^{2+}Eu2+

On forming Eu2+Eu^{2+}Eu2+, the two outermost 6s6s6s electrons are removed first: Eu2+:[Xe]4f7Eu^{2+} : [Xe]4f^7Eu2+:[Xe]4f7

So the outermost configuration of Eu2+Eu^{2+}Eu2+ is: 4f74f^74f7

  3. Why is Eu2+Eu^{2+}Eu2+ a strong reducing agent?

A reducing agent gets oxidized easily. Thus Eu2+Eu^{2+}Eu2+ tends to lose one electron to form Eu3+Eu^{3+}Eu3+: Eu2+→Eu3++e−Eu^{2+} \rightarrow Eu^{3+} + e^-Eu2+→Eu3++e−

The given statement says it is a strong reducing agent in spite of its ground-state configuration. This means although Eu2+Eu^{2+}Eu2+ itself has the especially stable half-filled configuration 4f74f^74f7, it still behaves as a reducing agent.

  4. Match with the options

    • A: 4f76s24f^7 6s^24f76s2 — configuration of neutral Eu, not Eu2+Eu^{2+}Eu2+
    • B: 4f64f^64f6 — not Eu2+Eu^{2+}Eu2+
    • C: 4f74f^74f7 — correct
    • D: 4f66s24f^6 6s^24f66s2 — incorrect
  5. Conclusion

The outermost electronic configuration of Eu2+Eu^{2+}Eu2+ is: 4f7\boxed{4f^7}4f7

Hence the correct option is C.
