Correct answer: A

  1. Rule for electronic configuration of transition metal ions

When transition metals form cations, electrons are removed first from the 4s4s4s orbital and then from the 3d3d3d orbital.

So we first write the neutral atom configurations.

  1. Write configurations of the neutral atoms
  • CrCrCr : [Ar] 3d54s1[Ar] \, 3d^5 4s^1[Ar]3d54s1
  • MnMnMn : [Ar] 3d54s2[Ar] \, 3d^5 4s^2[Ar]3d54s2
  • NiNiNi : [Ar] 3d84s2[Ar] \, 3d^8 4s^2[Ar]3d84s2
  • CuCuCu : [Ar] 3d104s1[Ar] \, 3d^{10} 4s^1[Ar]3d104s1
  • VVV : [Ar] 3d34s2[Ar] \, 3d^3 4s^2[Ar]3d34s2
  • FeFeFe : [Ar] 3d64s2[Ar] \, 3d^6 4s^2[Ar]3d64s2
  • CoCoCo : [Ar] 3d74s2[Ar] \, 3d^7 4s^2[Ar]3d74s2

  1. Find the ionic configurations in each option

Option A: Cr+Cr^+Cr+ and Mn2+Mn^{2+}Mn2+

  • Cr+Cr^+Cr+: remove one electron from 4s4s4s Cr+=[Ar] 3d5Cr^+ = [Ar] \, 3d^5Cr+=[Ar]3d5
  • Mn2+Mn^{2+}Mn2+: remove two electrons from 4s4s4s Mn2+=[Ar] 3d5Mn^{2+} = [Ar] \, 3d^5Mn2+=[Ar]3d5

Both have the same outer configuration: 3d53d^53d5.

So, A is correct.

Option B: Ni2+Ni^{2+}Ni2+ and Cu+Cu^+Cu+

  • Ni2+Ni^{2+}Ni2+: Ni2+=[Ar] 3d8Ni^{2+} = [Ar] \, 3d^8Ni2+=[Ar]3d8
  • Cu+Cu^+Cu+: Cu+=[Ar] 3d10Cu^+ = [Ar] \, 3d^{10}Cu+=[Ar]3d10

These are different.

So, B is incorrect.

Option C: V2+V^{2+}V2+ and Cr+Cr^+Cr+

  • V2+V^{2+}V2+: V2+=[Ar] 3d3V^{2+} = [Ar] \, 3d^3V2+=[Ar]3d3
  • Cr+Cr^+Cr+: Cr+=[Ar] 3d5Cr^+ = [Ar] \, 3d^5Cr+=[Ar]3d5

These are different.

So, C is incorrect.

Option D: Fe2+Fe^{2+}Fe2+ and Co+Co^+Co+

  • Fe2+Fe^{2+}Fe2+: Fe2+=[Ar] 3d6Fe^{2+} = [Ar] \, 3d^6Fe2+=[Ar]3d6
  • Co+Co^+Co+: remove one electron from 4s4s4s Co+=[Ar] 3d74s1Co^+ = [Ar] \, 3d^7 4s^1Co+=[Ar]3d74s1

These are different.

So, D is incorrect.

  1. Final conclusion

The pair having the same outermost electronic configuration is:

A  (Cr+ and Mn2+)\boxed{A \; (Cr^+ \text{ and } Mn^{2+})}A(Cr+ and Mn2+)

  1. Comparison with stored correct answer

Stored correct answer = A.

My derived answer = A.

So, they agree.
