  1. Magnetic moment depends on number of unpaired electrons

For first-row transition metal ions, the magnetic moment is usually estimated by the spin-only formula:

μ=n(n+2)  BM\mu = \sqrt{n(n+2)}\; \text{BM}μ=n(n+2)​BM

where nnn is the number of unpaired electrons.

So, the ion with the maximum number of unpaired electrons will have the maximum magnetic moment.


  1. Find electronic configuration of each ion

Recall the atomic numbers:

  • Ti:22Ti: 22Ti:22
  • Cr:24Cr: 24Cr:24
  • Mn:25Mn: 25Mn:25
  • Fe:26Fe: 26Fe:26

Also, electrons are removed first from 4s4s4s before 3d3d3d.

(A) Mn2+Mn^{2+}Mn2+

Neutral Mn:

Mn=[Ar]3d54s2Mn = [Ar]3d^5 4s^2Mn=[Ar]3d54s2

So,

Mn2+=[Ar]3d5Mn^{2+} = [Ar]3d^5Mn2+=[Ar]3d5

This has 5 unpaired electrons.


(B) Fe2+Fe^{2+}Fe2+

Neutral Fe:

Fe=[Ar]3d64s2Fe = [Ar]3d^6 4s^2Fe=[Ar]3d64s2

So,

Fe2+=[Ar]3d6Fe^{2+} = [Ar]3d^6Fe2+=[Ar]3d6

For free ion/high spin 3d63d^63d6, number of unpaired electrons = 4.


(C) Ti2+Ti^{2+}Ti2+

Neutral Ti:

Ti=[Ar]3d24s2Ti = [Ar]3d^2 4s^2Ti=[Ar]3d24s2

So,

Ti2+=[Ar]3d2Ti^{2+} = [Ar]3d^2Ti2+=[Ar]3d2

This has 2 unpaired electrons.

Neutral Cr:

So,

Using μ=n(n+2)\mu = \sqrt{n(n+2)}μ=n(n+2)​:

  • Ti2+Ti^{2+}Ti2+: n=2n=2n=2 μ=2(2+2)=8\mu = \sqrt{2(2+2)} = \sqrt{8}μ=2(2+2)​=8​
  • Cr2+Cr^{2+}Cr2+: n=4n=4n=4 μ=4(4+2)=24\mu = \sqrt{4(4+2)} = \sqrt{24}μ=4(4+2)​=24​
  • Fe2+Fe^{2+}Fe2+: n=4n=4n=4 μ=24\mu = \sqrt{24}μ=24​
  • Mn2+Mn^{2+}Mn2+: n=5n=5n=5 μ=5(5+2)=35\mu = \sqrt{5(5+2)} = \sqrt{35}μ=5(5+2)​=35​

Clearly,

35>24>8\sqrt{35} > \sqrt{24} > \sqrt{8}35​>24​>8​

So, Mn2+Mn^{2+}Mn2+ has the maximum magnetic moment.
