    • In group 6 elements, the oxidizing character of the highest oxidation state oxides decreases down the group.
    • Chromium is smaller and its +6+6+6 state is less stable compared to molybdenum.
    • Therefore, Cr(VI)\mathrm{Cr}(VI)Cr(VI) compounds such as CrO3\mathrm{CrO}_3CrO3​ more readily get reduced, so they act as stronger oxidizing agents than MoO3\mathrm{MoO}_3MoO3​.
