Correct answer: B

  1. Interpret the compound

Copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate is written as: CuSO4⋅5H2OCuSO_4\cdot 5H_2OCuSO4⋅5H2O

Its actual coordination formulation is: [Cu(H2O)4]SO4⋅H2O[Cu(H_2O)_4]SO_4\cdot H_2O[Cu(H2O)4]SO4⋅H2O

  2. Find the secondary valency

According to Werner’s theory, secondary valency equals the coordination number of the metal ion.

In [Cu(H2O)4]2+[Cu(H_2O)_4]^{2+}[Cu(H2O)4]2+, copper is directly bonded to 4 water molecules.

Hence, secondary valency of copper is: 444

  3. Find the number of hydrogen-bonded water molecules

Total water molecules present = 555.

Out of these, 444 are coordinated directly to Cu2+Cu^{2+}Cu2+.

Therefore, the remaining 111 water molecule is outside the coordination sphere and is hydrogen bonded in the crystal.

    So, number of hydrogen-bonded water molecules = 5−4=15 - 4 = 15−4=1

  4. Match with options

    • A: 555 and 111 →\to→ incorrect
    • B: 444 and 111 →\to→ correct
    • C: 666 and 555 →\to→ incorrect
    • D: 666 and 444 →\to→ incorrect

Therefore, the correct answer is B.
