JEE MainPhysicsWave OpticsMCQ+4 / −1
Two stars are 10 light years away from the earth. They are seen through a telescope of objective diameter 30 cm. The wavelength of light is 600 nm. To see the stars just resolved by the telescope, the minimum distance between them should be (1 light year = 9.46 ×\times× 1015 m) of the order of :
  1. A
    106 km
  2. B
    108 km
  3. C
    1011 km
  4. D
    1010 km

Correct answer: B

  1. Use Rayleigh criterion for a telescope

For a circular objective, the minimum angular separation for just resolution is

θmin⁡=1.22 λD\theta_{\min} = 1.22\,\frac{\lambda}{D}θmin=1.22Dλ

Given:

  • D=30 cm=0.30 mD = 30\text{ cm} = 0.30\text{ m}D=30 cm=0.30 m
  • λ=600 nm=600×10−9 m\lambda = 600\text{ nm} = 600 \times 10^{-9}\text{ m}λ=600 nm=600×10−9 m

So,

θmin⁡=1.22×600×10−90.30\theta_{\min} = 1.22\times \frac{600\times 10^{-9}}{0.30}θmin=1.22×0.30600×10−9 =1.22×2×10−6=2.44×10−6 rad= 1.22\times 2\times 10^{-6} = 2.44\times 10^{-6}\text{ rad}=1.22×2×10−6=2.44×10−6 rad
  1. Distance of the stars from Earth

Each star is 101010 light years away.

Using 111 light year =9.46×1015 m= 9.46\times 10^{15}\text{ m}=9.46×1015 m,

L=10×9.46×1015=9.46×1016 mL = 10\times 9.46\times 10^{15} = 9.46\times 10^{16}\text{ m}L=10×9.46×1015=9.46×1016 m
  1. Convert angular separation to linear separation

For small angles,

θ≈sL\theta \approx \frac{s}{L}θ≈Ls

Hence minimum separation,

s=Lθmin⁡s = L\theta_{\min}s=Lθmin s=9.46×1016×2.44×10−6s = 9.46\times 10^{16} \times 2.44\times 10^{-6}s=9.46×1016×2.44×10−6 s≈23.08×1010=2.308×1011 ms \approx 23.08\times 10^{10} = 2.308\times 10^{11}\text{ m}s≈23.08×1010=2.308×1011 m
  1. Convert into km
2.308×1011 m=2.308×108 km2.308\times 10^{11}\text{ m} = 2.308\times 10^{8}\text{ km}2.308×1011 m=2.308×108 km

So the required minimum distance is of the order of

108 km10^8\text{ km}108 km
  1. Match with options
  • A: 10610^6106 km
  • B: 10810^8108 km
  • C: 101110^{11}1011 km
  • D: 101010^{10}1010 km

Therefore, the correct option is B.
