The excess pressure inside a soap bubble is thrice the excess pressure inside a second soap bubble. The ratio between the volume of the first and the second bubble is:
  1. A
    1:91: 91:9
  2. B
    1:271: 271:27
  3. C
    1:811: 811:81
  4. D

Correct answer: B

  1. Excess pressure in a soap bubble

For a soap bubble, the excess pressure is

ΔP=4TR\Delta P = \frac{4T}{R}ΔP=R4T

where TTT is surface tension and RRR is the radius of the bubble.

  1. Given relation between pressures

Let the first bubble have radius R1R_1R1 and the second have radius R2R_2R2.

Given:

ΔP1=3ΔP2\Delta P_1 = 3\Delta P_2ΔP1=3ΔP2

Using ΔP=4TR\Delta P = \frac{4T}{R}ΔP=R4T:

4TR1=3(4TR2)\frac{4T}{R_1} = 3\left(\frac{4T}{R_2}\right)R14T=3(R24T)

Cancel 4T4T4T:

1R1=3R2\frac{1}{R_1} = \frac{3}{R_2}R11=R23

So,

R2=3R1R_2 = 3R_1R2=3R1

Hence,

R1:R2=1:3R_1 : R_2 = 1:3R1:R2=1:3
  1. Volume ratio

Volume of a bubble is proportional to the cube of its radius:

V∝R3V \propto R^3V∝R3

Therefore,

V1:V2=R13:R23=13:33=1:27V_1 : V_2 = R_1^3 : R_2^3 = 1^3 : 3^3 = 1:27V1:V2=R13:R23=13:33=1:27
  1. Correct option

Thus, the ratio of the volumes of the first and second bubbles is

1:27\boxed{1:27}1:27

So the correct option is B.
